Hey everyone

We have a 5 month old male pup that has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. The vets did an x ray and told us we'll need to schedule a surgery asap.
I didn't like the "surgery first" approach neither the time pressure they have put on us.

We are getting a second opinion on Weds but I was wondering if anyone has experience with HD here that can review the attached scans?

Those hips are bad. Glad you are getting a second opinion. Not sure what country you are in, can you find a good orthopedic vet?

What surgery are they wanting to do soon? TPO? JPS? There is a certain 'ASAP' situation with both of those surgeries relative to age of puppy and their degree of dysplasia. JPS is, I think, performed in very young pups under 4-5 months of age and TPO can be done on slightly older pups (still under a year of age) as long as arthritis hasn't set in significantly yet.

A rescue pup we adopted in 2007 was a couple of weeks later diagnosed (age 5 months) with severe hip dysplasia by our family vet. Our vet hoped that he'd be a candidate for TPO surgery and referred us immediately to an orthopedic vet. The ortho said that the arthritis was too advanced already (at 5 months!) to do the TPO surgery and that the only recourse would be full hip replacements at some point in his life. Just sharing this story as an example of why there can be some urgency if surgery IS really required.

That said, I do think it's important to get a second opinion from an orthopedic veterinarian before proceeding with surgery. Best of luck with your puppy and check back to let us know how it's going.
