Today's treat

I live on a farm, so my dogs get plenty of good food. Gotta clean out the freezer? Start with last year's pork. That new roadkill fresh venison on the side of the road? It's free. Call the sheriff for a deer permit and bring it home, gut it, skin it, cut it up and freeze it for later.
All those extra eggs? Don't sell them, the dogs can eat them too.
Got any extra rabbits in the freezer? The dogs love it. Any extra goat or cow milk? Or what about those bags of lamb or calf milk replacer?

No, I usually don't give my dogs raw meat, although I have occasionally tossed in some freshly killed rabbits....and there have been those occasional "oops" incidents concerning sheep, goats and chickens.

I remember a discussion with the vet about the local wolf keeper who fed only raw meat. The vet mentioned the man's scars and would not recommend the raw meat diet.

Hmmm.

I've fed the GSD in this photo (my service dog) a raw diet almost his entire life. The puppy has been eating raw meat since I brought her home at 2 months old (she's almost 4 months old now). And a huge variety of raw meat at that -- venison, beef, chicken, turkey, elk, etc.

Vicious dogs? Perhaps the Teddy Bear thinks so. Me? I'm willing to take my chances. As Barb says, they're not wolves.

The guy has scars because they're wolves. Not because they eat raw meat.

Many, many dog owners, including many here on the boards, feed their dogs a raw diet. Very healthy and natural for the dogs, and certainly doesn't make them vicious.

Raw meat is better, and more easily digested by dogs, than cooked meat. So no reason to waste time cooking it.

Re: Today's treat

No dog ever becomes vicious from eating raw meat. My dog eats ONLY raw meat, raw bones, raw innards. BUT: The diet must be well-researched first to be balanced. Cooking denatures bones and makes them dangerous for a dog to eat. Only raw meaty bones, as part of a balnced, well-researched raw diet should be fed in the proportions that are safe for the individual dog. It takes some studying, research to do this right. But.. no dog is ever vicious from eating species-appropriate foods such as raw meat fed correctly.
