Hey my pups almost 5 months and he seems to be having issues as of the past 2-3 days with pooping, I am concerned but don't know if he needs to go in for medical attention yet, He is eating completely fine zero loss of appetite, He is pooping some but mostly diarrhea and he will spend like 5 minutes after sometimes continuing to try pooping more but nothing coming out. He also has not lost any energy he is still running around like a madman in the back yard with me so I dont think hes in pain, he hasnt wimpered or anything when pooping but one time he did lift both his hind legs mid poop(IDK what thats all about lol) Anyways I have been watching him carefully and reading stuff online and it seems most people seem to think the concern is when they stop eating and slow down, cud this just be an irritated butt from diarrhea or wats up any good opinions?

Some questions" Poop color? Any blood? Is it watery or cow pie?
What food is he on? Any possibility he got into something he should not have eaten?

1. Take to vet since it has gone on for a few days. He is only 5 months old and diarreha can dehydrate a pup even if they are eating and drinking

Some of it sounds like acute colitis, but without knowing about color consistency and blood in poop it is hard to guess.

poop is cowpie but some tiny pieces solid, its light brown hasnt turned black or anything scary yet, if u think its that disease i rlly will bring him to my vet within a few hours hopefuly, but also if this means anything I read online that vets poke and prod around the intenstines to see if dog respond to any discomfort so I attempted this(obviously not saying I am a pro or even competent at it) but he didnt make any discomfort, and this is rlly wierd u said dehydrated even tho drinking and all because this might sound gross but he kisses me so much I practically know its taste lol and it seems different past day and half

and only bad thing he could have gotten into I can think of would be either random grass chunks he eats in the yard lol or he got ahold of an old bully stick that looked nasty and he found under my couch in room and I threw it out

also does their pee turn more yellow when dehydrated ? he jus peed its slightly yellow but not crazy bright, also he jus pooped again they were more solid but idk still a little strain after but seemed shorter than be4

Brighter pee than what you are used too can mean less liquid going in, yes.

check his gums (between lip and gum). If it feels tacky he is dehydrated. That is always a good check. There is the skin pull test but shepherds have alot of fur

If he is not and still drinking and eating that is good.

Problem with diarrhea is that the nutrients are going straight through which is why they start to slow down.

Acute colitis is not a disease per say although colitis can be chronic, but can be a reaction to something ingested, etc. One of the symptoms is straining to defecate without being constipated. Sometimes you see blood in the stool.

I see you mentioned bully stick. That might have set it off.

Fast for about 12 hours as he is still a pup and I dont like 24 hours for youngins.

Then bland diet to start things back up.

If he is lethargic, the diarrhea contrinues, he stops drinking or eating or seems dehydrated then off to vet.

by bland diet wat do u mean? i always jus give him purina puppy chow lol, but alright I will take his food dish away starting right now and give it back at midnight or so, but I am about to go to the park with him and idk how happy he is gonna be if we play a bunch and hes good and gets no treats lol i give him small chunks of treats throughout our playtime ussually like when he gets distracted but comes to me first time i call him, or if he goes rlly rlly far for frisbee and sets at my feet and sits good ill check his lips in a few minutes but i might jus fast him after we get back from park lol i dont want him goin disobedient there

For a bland diet, most people cook rice and boiled chicken and mix it up.

If he is not as energetic, that's when I worry. If he is eating and drinking well, that's good. But a puppy with diarrhea is dangerous. If more than 2 days, I would go to the vet.

Call your vet and ask. Tacky gums mean needs more liquid. If he is getting firm though he should do okay. But again I freak about puppies cause they dry up way too fast for my liking with the runs

LOL. Welcome to the GSD "he said he musta jus gotten into something bad" club. :D

Mine ate gravel in September when it was stuck to something else he was trying to eat. Result? Overnight at vet on IV and metronidazole since he was barfing, not eating and pooping out watery blood. Xrays showed teeny little gravel working its way through a really torked off colon. Blood stopped and on a special diet for a while till everything works itself out.

That was $1500 ago! Of course I have pet insurance. $200 deductible and then they pay 90%....phew

Ahhhhh I love the GSD!
