Hey guys :) I just got a german shepherd/malinois pup. He is 16 weeks old. Looks more like a German shepherd but the colour of a Malinois! He is a bit whingy but too be expected! Got the hang of the collar and lead on his first walk. He now lives with a patterdale and wired hair jack russell. I have never had a shepherd before so any advice would be great. I grew up with labradors! He was clearly unsocialised where he was born because he is nervous around people and dogs. So we have had him around people who have shepherds. He has also met a few different dogs including a very big husky/german shepherd pup who is twice his size but only about 3 weeks older! He was so nervous at first he was growling and showing teeth. But he seemed better then when we walked them together. Just wondering what else I can do to make him happy around people and dogs? Anyways here he is.. Charlie :)

Super-duper cute! If he tends to be on the nervous side, proceed slowly. Socialization is only beneficial if the pup perceives his experience as positive. Everything is new to him right now. so work on making small sections of the world familiar and safe for him. I second the advice to just take time to let him get used to you, his new family, a new routine. Have fun and play lots and let him know he is the best pup in the world that can do no wrong! To build his self-confidence, manage him so he makes good choices and earn praise and rewards for being so smart/obedient/brave (take away the temptation and the opportunity to make the wrong choice).

He looks like a little devil, full fire and mischief! Enjoy him!

I recently brought home a 3 month old puppy that had never been on a leash, or in a house, and had always been with her siblings and parents. I brought her in and set her down in the house on a tile entryway, the walked across the room and opened the door to the back yard so she could see it. We have a wood deck in back, but to get there she had to traverse a laminate floor and another tile entryway before she could reach the back door and the deck. It literally took her an hour to reach the second tile entryway, and by then she was exhausted! Realizing (I know, better late than never right!) that she was overwhelmed, I finally carried her out onto the grass in our back yard, and then remembered even that was new to her because she'd only seen the dirt yard she'd been raised in.
Over the next few days I became more and more alarmed at how low-energy and lethargic she was...no play at all, not eating well, and would never walk more than a few feet without collapsing. So I rushed her to the vet.
She checked out fine, not sick at all. The vet guessed that she was depressed/stressed and could be suffering from separation anxiety. So we brought her home and just made her comfortable. On her 3rd night I decided that she needed a good bathing. Once bathed and dried she became the dog we'd seen previously, playful, happy, and full of energy, and she's been going strong ever since!

I thought I share this with you because you have only had your puppy a short time, and depending on the dog and the environment they're used to, the stress of all new surroundings can be overwhelming. Give your puppy time to settle in and get to know you before getting too upset or concerned about any behaviors.

Thanks guys. He is a lot better now. He is not sitting in the corner all day. He is now playing with the dogs and more happy to see me and the boyfriend.
Dont worry about the choke chain i never used it and never will. It was just there so he could get used to something around his neck. I got him a halti harness that attaches at the front so he will not be able to pull when strong enough! It is too big so just using a normal collar for now
