This was on facebook and I was friends with her many many years ago. They aren't GSD's, they are little mixed breed pups. This is like the second or third time that this girl has had puppies from the same parents. It isn't an accident anymore. She also gets rid of them at 6 weeks. Last time I said something she ignored me, this time I told her that the law is 8 weeks. Her response..."I have worked with rescues for over 30 years and they find homes for them at 6 weeks to, thanks for your imput." I was livid, because if a person has been involved in rescue for 30 years, how do they think its right to breed two mutts? How does she not know its not healthy for the pups? Does she not see all the dogs that are homeless? She is just outright trying to make money, how does she sleep at night? How does the rescue accept what she does? Oh she got me mad, I sent her a final message, then blocked and deleted her, I can't stand people like that:mad::mad::mad:

I won't judge the girl for allowing her dog to have pups as i don't know the situation.

But it is debatable on what age the pups should be released from the mother and given to homes.

A female naturally should have lost a few pups so can't still feed say 10 pups after 6 weeks. She also begins to want to run away from them. The pups at that stage will be tearing the mother up and always looking for food. They need to be weaned and given another source of food.

Most people will separate the pups from the mother at 5-6 weeks and leave the pups on their own in an area and feed them dry food or whatever.

Now is it better for the pup to be with the litter mates for the next 2 weeks or is it better they be in a home with a new pack?

It all depends on who is breeding the pups and who is collecting them.

Your portrayal of the bitch/puppies isn't my experience at all.

It is better to be with the litter mates for the next two weeks, as they do learn from the puppies in the litter, and you can tell more about the personality of an 8-week-old puppy than a six week old pup.

But people have gotten pups at six weeks since people have had domestic dogs, and the vast majority do just fine.

In all likelihood, 6 weeks is just fine. I've seen many, many puppies go home that age and have been just fine. They are weaned by then. How much time they need with their littermates is debatable. I think that depends on the individual dog. I've taken two puppies home at 7 weeks and both dogs were never, ever mouthy. They did not need to be taught bite inhibition, they already did it even before 8 weeks. But other dogs maybe could benefit from longer exposure to their littermates....you just don't know other than hindsight. I'm not advocating for sending pups home at 6 weeks (I think 8 is ideal) but I don't get into a huge argument over it either.

The laws regarding the age puppies can go home were not instated to protect puppies, just keep that in mind. In many ways they do protect the dog inadvertently but those laws were instated to protect the government's collection of taxes and such, regulation of the "goods". The law itself doesn't really prove that 8 weeks is the ideal age.

I won't comment on what the person is breeding and why since it wasn't the topic of the thread. I'm not condoning their actions but in general will not have a fit if a dog goes home at 6 weeks.

If this woman truly works in a rescue, why is she breeding mutts and who would pay for a mutt? Its hard to believe anyone working with rescues would be so blind as to add to the problem instead of neutering and spaying their own mixed breed pets. Either she never really listened to any of the rescue information or plain just doesn't really care. Five weeks a pup can survive away from it's mother if it is being fed puppy food but if left with the litter it will at least learn bite inhibition and social interaction. Just because a pup can survive away from its mother at 5 weeks doesn't mean it should have to. I have to agree with the original poster - time to cut her off your friends list.

I was thinking the same thing as I read this thread.

I'm not alone then, I find it stressful too. I learned things about people that I'd really rather not know.

People kept telling me just ignore the nastiness and the political posts so in the end I had to block so many people I thought...why bother?

This is why I am no longer on Facebook.

Too much stress from there.

Worst of all were the political posts.

Usually our bitch will start weaning the pups at 4-5 weeks, herself. At 5-6 weeks, we encourage and promote weaning by offering food regularly for the pups, on a schedule. By the end of 6 weeks, they're only with mom at night. By 7 weeks, they're completely off their mom and on to semi-solid/solid food.
We don't send them to their new homes until they're 8-9 weeks, as at that point they're fully on solid food, and we use this time, away from mom, for them to learn to depend on their "people" instead of their mom, and so that way they're still in a familiar home, with things they know and trust, and are able to comfortably make that transition from needing mom, to not needing her, before they move on to their new homes.

really, what can you do? Well, you did it - no longer speak with her. If you're really bothered a. report her as she's not following the law and b. talk to whomever she works with in rescue. Not a lot of options here. Otherwise, leave it and don't stress over what you can't change.

I'm failing to see how what she is doing is "cruel".....

llombardo......life is too short to get worked up over such things. People will do what they see is right no matter how much you argue with them about it.
Chances are these puppies are making great pets for people which is why she is selling them easily :)

I think I'm more aggravated that she is active in rescue and still does this? That is what got me, the 6 week thing isn't great, but I can live with that. I can't even begin to think that any rescue would accept what she is doing. I don't have any info on her to report her:( I have the town and her name, that is all, and I think its a very small town, so who knows if anything would be done.

post her behavior on facebook and im sure someone will chastise her. Is she too lazy to take care of them the extra 2 weeks? You should put her kennel name in any post you make about her so people will think twice. Its not cruelty but its puppymillish like she wants them out fast so she can breed more.

the law says 8 weeks, not 6...that is not an opinion. By her aggressive response and her appeal to authority to the OP you can somewhat tell she doesn't seem to have an educated opinion about it, i.e. no other reason than, she just does it cause she knows better because of working with rescues. Nothing about the benefits of leaving the litter at 6 weeks, etc. That along with the fact that she supposedly works with a rescue and she is breeding mixes?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!!?

She needs to be reported and stopped... Good on you OP for saying something.

Ideally, pups are weaned at about 6 weeks but left with their litter mates until 9-10 weeks or longer. Some studies show that pups who stay with their litter longer are better socialized and have better bite inhibition. Since there is nothing ideal about this litter, who would expect the breeder to care about the puppies future.
