Hello,

When West was a puppy he would often eat his own poop. As he got older, he stopped doing that, so i thought maybe it was just a bad habit he got over. He's now 8 months, and began doing it again! Now, he does it way more often than ever before. He does it almost every time he goes potty. Have any of you had this same issue or have some insight on what may be causing this? thanks!

Kiya is now 7yrs old and has been a poop eater all her life. When she was little I tried everything from meat tenderizer, Distaste, Forbid, pinapple. Unfortuantely nothing worked. So I routinely go outside with the dogs and pick up asap. She's pretty good with "leave it" but she's a sneaky one so sometimes...she wins. Frozzen popsicles are best!

There's actually this stuff you can buy at a pet store that helps with the poop eating. It starts with a c.. Corraphagia.. I know that PetCo sells a bunch of different products that help dogs who eat their own feces. Sometimes, they do it because of something they are lacking in their diet.

Stool eating is actually a common behavior in puppies, especially ones that were whelped in "less than ideal" environments. Most of the time, just being diligent about removing all the poop as soon as he goes to the bathroom and verbally correcting the behavior should be enough to stop it. Sometimes, like all other things, it becomes so ingrained that it's hard to get rid of the behavior.

Try removing all stool as soon as he goes to the bathroom and verbally telling him "NO" and using body-blocks to keep the dog out of the way while you pick up the stool and throw it out.

Hope that helps,

:wild: That's hilarious!
Max ate his poop as a pup. Couldn't believe it when I saw him do it the first time. Tried some of the "remedies" but ultimately found that, like everything else, diligent training was what worked. (Plus, I am very quick with a pooper scooper):D
