I know shepherds shouldn't get baths often but as stated before Bella has horrible skin problems. The vet gave us medicated spray and shampoo. She said give Bella a bath twice a week for two weeks and make sure I spray her with the medicated spray. I also have to give her pills. So far I've given her one bath and sprayed her twice and she's been taking the pill. She's not scratching as bad as she was before.

My question is, is it really safe to give a bath twice a week for two weeks with medicated shampoo ? I'm nervous I'll make something worse.

Also around June we would like to buy Bella a pool she could swim in to help with the weight her and joints. I also heard this builds great muscle is that true ? Lol

YES! Assuming its either chlorhex or keto-chlor, I've had dogs in rescue with this shampoo that had to have medicated baths for twice a week for a month. Please don't try to draw conclusions based on conventional wisdom about grooming shampoos -- this medicated stuff from the vet is a whole other thing (it generally doesn't even lather).

Please see my post in a thread last night about an itchy dog referencing the gold-standard dermatology treatment guidelines about frequent bathing for atopic dermatitis. Trust the derms, as they're looking at evidence (peer-reviewed studies).

Yes, I have even had to bathe dogs daily when skin conditions were bad enough. If the shampoo or a chlorhexidine/ketoconazole mix, check out Phytovet CK, expensive but good stuff. The pram one is probably pramoxine? Anti itch and must be reapplied to keep working.

The direction not to over bathe is for healthy dogs. Sometimes things go wrong and you gotta do what you gotta do

I bathed my guy twice a week from last April through September with chlorhexidine shampoo under directions of his derm. vet in order to get his skin infections and allergy-caused itchiness under control. It worked well with no harm to his coat or skin. What The Cowboysgirl said .....
