Alex dug out of our brand new 8 foot fence (for him specifically) yesterday when I took my inlaws puppy to the vet for her first shots.
We have contacted and visited animal control and the spca. He is on dog detective, petfinder, ineighbor and craigslist as missing.

Some people say they saw him at the beach yesterday, and one kid said today he saw him at the beach with some small brown dog. Not sure if that was Alex though.

We hung up posters and handed them out everywhere, and not ONE response.

We are devastated....

Not only are we devastated, but I feel that it is my fault for not putting him in his crate when I left. But it was nice out so I left Sugar and him out, and my husband was supposed to be home right after I left. But he ended up taking longer.....I can't believe I was so stupid!

Now we might not get him back...

Don't give up hope. Put an ad in the paper, check your shelter -- not by phone they sometimes do not know what a GSD is when it is sitting in their shelter. Go there.

Good luck.

Re: Alex is missing!!!!

Best of luck. I'll be sending successful vibes your way. When you get him back, you can make an adjustment to the fence to prevent digging- run chain link from the vertical surface of the fence down to the ground and out horizontally a couple feet. This can be left under the ground but this will prevent digging out. You can also add some electrified livestock wire to the bottom. It will give your dog a small shock (it's not bad, I've been shocked by it before, it's very startling but not painful) and will dissuade from hanging around in the area. But you already know the best solution- crate indoors or build a roofed kennel sunk in concrete that can be locked.

I hope you find him soon!

MTAussie, s- happens. Don't worry about the shouldas, just concentrate your energies on finding your dog! Did you notify the local police? If you have the HomeAgain microchip, they can send out alerts that there is a lost dog. Try contacting local vets, any local rescues, training facilities, etc. The more eyes you have out there, the better. Call all your friends, family, and coworkers in the area. Walk around with your other dog because oftentimes lost dogs will reconnect quicker with their doggy housemates. Keep us posted!

Re: Alex is missing!!!!

Where in VA are you located?
I suggest that you go on Petfinder and notify all rescues in an 80-mile radius. I would also contact Virginia German Shepherd Rescue.
Prayers going your way, it is very scary when they are lost. GSDs have an incredible talent to get into trouble.

Re: Alex is missing!!!!

If you will email me a jpeg photo and your contact information I will have him posted on our web site.

Also, if you send me your email address I will be happy to send you a set of word documents about what to do when your dog is lost. They have a lot of very useful tips and information in them.

My email is gsdhouse@comcast.net

Re: Alex is missing!!!!

Sending prayers to you! When my old man bolted during an unexpected fireworks display from the neighbors, I personally called all the area vets. It was that move that got him back for me.

Thanks BJ! I called the local emergency vet, and they said to make sure to call animal control, because they will have to go through there first. So I will be back at animal control tomorrow! I will keep updating to let everyone know what is going on.

Please learn from my mistake, don't leave your woofs outside unsupervised! If they get out, someone may pick them up and no matter your percautions you may not get them back.....it is a horrible feeling, and 100% preventable....

I did not see a response to this post, so I wanted to point it out again.

This is a great resource. A neighbor of mine had used them and as it turned out, another neighbor a few blocks away had the dog and was waiting until Monday morning to be able to take her into animal control. This may very well be the case with your Alex...it is worth a shot in any case.

I am looking at it, I like all the success stories. But they won't call until 9am tomorrow, which it seems everyone will be at work. I don't know if that will be effective?
