Fingers and toes crossed for a healthy successful litter,
I know I wouldn’t pay over 3500.00
That’s not a slam on anyone that would or breeders that charge more.
I know too well the cost of just having the pup, clubs- gear- gas- emergencies etc, luckily I have dog me downs, much of Kai old training gear :)
Ah, you haven’t gotten the pup yet? I bet you’ll be pretty happy. Please post pics of that rascal.

I just met an older guy with a WL nice gorgeous young intact male that he got from Craigslist. He has trouble handling him so I gave him my info. Would take the dog in a heartbeat

We paid $2,500 for Ilita. It was a common average among the breeders we looked at.

There is one breeder very close to us that was charging exorbitant prices: $7500 - $8500 and more for PUPPIES. As in 8- to 12-weeks old. And his 'trained' dogs were astronomical, as in add a zero. IMHO, he was not a trainer nor a responsible breeder, but simply trying to ride the wave of popularity and marketing through the fear factor of home invasions. When asked if I had looked into them I said "yes, and no thank you".

Higher cost does not necessarily equal high quality.

It does boggle the mind. Older dogs specifically trained and finished for PP are one thing but the pup gouging is reaching stupidity. Market area seems to add another perceived value for some. To each his own : ))

I really like his (Haz) tell it like it is attitude in training and opinions on dog lines. The hard thing to parse is that usually in the supply and demand model, when things are in less demand, prices go down. When high demand shows up, prices go up. I get that the pandemic saw a lot of people buying dogs, but I think that will prove to be an ebb and flow issue. What I believe I am seeing now, especially in low end and middle quality dogs, is a lot of litter leftovers, sometimes greater than a year old. At least with Shield, I think he would put some good training on the dog, and be up front about the level achieved with the new buyer.
Haz is a commercial breeder and importer. His prices are higher in general and probably will always be on the high end. While I don’t have anything against Commercial breeders, you can find the same quality dogs at lower prices from hobby breeders.

Amen to that

I guess it all depends on how much worse the economy gets going forward. Everything is affected so it will be interesting to see if and where things even out. For me, I resent seeing dog feed increasing by what seems to be around 30% and breeders increasing pup prices 75%. It’s not all breeders, I know, but it can’t and should not be ignored, IMHO.

I recently watched a video on Schutzhund German Shepherds where a top Schutzhund trainer offered $10K for a 1 year old WGSD prospect. Personally, the greatest dog I have ever had was purchased from a backyard breeder for $75 back in the late 70's but I was probably very lucky.
If you have extremely high expectations in a specific area and you are convinced that a particular puppy fits all your requirements the price is pretty much as high as you or your competition are willing to go.

I don't know if this has been said but those $7500 and up prices are typically from a "trainer/breeder" that has good BS marketing to people that just don't know better. OR they are for ADULT, fully trained, dogs. Sport would be a titled dog. PP would be fully trained. But puppies? Nope. Scam.

A typical working line is $3000 or below. Show line people will charge whatever showline people will pay. I can't speak to that other than the prices are higher for a "pretty" dog. If you see those crazy prices....walk away.

Yeah it’s definitely an interesting market right now
Here in Ontario, commonly WL’s are either 2500-3500 and they cap at that, 4000.00 to 8000.00 is pretty much unheard of for a working line ,
And I have not seen them priced higher than 4000 here- now the 7500.00 price tag on a puppy? That floors me, and it’s all marketing at that point-

However-
Show lines very different

7500-9000 is not unheard of.

Actually right down the road from me there’s SL’s
I’m going imply that it’s a loose term for their dogs, no papers etc but all sold out now at 5000.00 a pup and all marketed as Show lines.

The show line proves here quickly get ridiculous. I can get one of the top young dogs in Germany for that price or a titled female.
Yes
The prices are on the top top end :/
That being said,
You’d be hard pressed to even buy a rescue dog for less then 800.00, they even went up to almost unattainable for people that can’t afford a 2000 and up price
