Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

Klytie is now 8+ years old amazingly smart dog with strong ball/play drive. Protective, but very outgoing. Was recycled to a shelter several times before coming to her forever home... Definitely an overlooked Diamond!
Image

Duke was found running feral with a Dog pack and trapped. While not aggressive towards people he wasn't trusting and again was recycled thru the shelter several times til we brought him here to foster. In my pack setting he relaxed and became our Wacko boy. Again, he'll never go anywhere else.
This past February we had a serious accident and he was thrown from the vehicle thru a window and vanished for 5 weeks. The search in snow up to my knees, and the help by several rescue groups and individuals who kept track of him til He and I could be in one place is a story in itself. Suffice to say for now, he is back home

This is 6 1.2 year old Rommel at a VGSR event in Gainesville,VA back in August. I had to hold a treat up for him while they snapped the shots.

Still can't believe this dog was turned into a shelter twice, last time VGSR rescued him a couple of hours before he was going to be PTS in a high kill North Carolina shelter. Forever grateful to all the rescuers out there who give these dogs another chance.

He weighed 80lbs and had no muscle in his back legs when VGSR got him and by the time we got him he was at 90lbs with a little muscle that allowed him to walk (wobbly) but not run. First thing I did was get him checked out by the orthopedist and then the neurologist to make sure there was not a medical reason for his problem (good relationship with them from my last dog). Orthopedist said very mild dysplasia and that he taken a few whacks in the back from something hard but he'd be fine when he got his muscles up to snuff. Neurologist said the same thing. He is now a little over 100lbs and can run like the wind.

Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

This is Elvis just after I got him this Christmas. He was given to me from a person on a website in the area for free. He is very much a puppy still. I am not certain on his age or what he's mixed with.

Image

we also got Duke about the same time too. The same way and same situation, however we are thinking Lab mix of some sort for him and not a puppy anymore.

Image

I am sorry the pictures are so big, I am quite new to this photobucket thing. If anyone has an idea at what my mixes are feel free to let me know. I really would love to know what they are. We have had both dogs almost a month now, and I think they will be indoor dogs. He doesn't know it yet but when he deploys to Iraq they will be sleeping in the bed. hehehe. I am happy I found this site, thanks all.

Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

First post here on the forums and so glad that such a place exists on the 'net! Wanted to share a little, too...

Here's my old buddy Shep that we rescued from the pound. For a high school kid that had always wanted a dog, this was about the coolest thing ever. They estimated he was about 6 or 7 years old when we adopted him (or was it he who adopted us?). I'll never forget walking in to pick out a dog and all the other dogs in the pound were barking and jumping up and down... but not Shep. He was just sitting there, silent, watching us. Right then we knew he was the one for us. We got to spend a great seven years together and we still miss him like crazy!

Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

Hi me again. Turns out my Elvis is actual purebred german shepherd. He just has a really unique coloring, I wouldn't say rare though. Anyhow unfortunately Duke went to a new home because he was just to ingrained in his bad behaviours unfortunately, but he loves his new home. I will miss him but it's hard to think about when I am trying to train my puppy. Elvis is 5 months old and quite a handful but we are having fun.

Here's my Miller....can't promise he's full blooded GSD, but he lived partially blind on the streets of Gary Indiana for quite some time before he was picked up. Whatever he is, he is the most loyal and brave dog I've ever met.

Where did you get Tuki from? If I'm not mistaken you've lucked into a Dutch shepherd puppy!

Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

Hi Joan - I got her from a shelter in Marysville, CA which is a semi rural city here in Northern California. She was listed as a Dutch Shepherd Mix on Petharbor, and apparently was brought in by her owners because she was too mouthy (what did they expect?). Anyways, I do not know how that shelter comes up with the breed, if they just list what the previous owner said, or if they try to make their own assessment. When the lady at the shelter was reviewing the paperwork on her as I was adopting, she told me "Apparently it's a Dutch Shepherd". But I did not inquire further (perhaps I will call them back to see if they know anything else, as I am kind of curious).

We'll see what she turns out to be, she's a great girl whatever her recipe is.

Tara Sioux dumped on a busy KY interstate and left to die, get shot or starve. Picked up by a kind trucker and taken to the next town and the only shelter, a kill shelter. A volunteer said she is too beautiful to die and took her home to her horse farm and posted her here.... her friend a kind flight attendant donated her flight to the midwest from KY. She is the most affectionate GSD I have ever owned. She oooozes love and I oooze it right back.

and Bauer, plucked from an Ohio gassing facility as an 11 mo. old pup..... I couldn't bear to think his his first birthday would be at the bottom of a landfill, had him transported across 4 states in one day and drove almost 1,000 mi. round trip to bring him home to where he always was meant to be.... our hearts and lives. A teddy bear in GSD clothing.....

The two love each other and have a special connection. Here they are doing what GSDs do, stalking... and making way for the chase one early foggy morning.....

Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

Dave, unfortunately a lot of Dutch shepherds end up in the shelters in california. North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue has taken quite a few of them in from CA shelters.

I don't know if there is just a few irrisponsible breeders around in CA or what.

What I do know. Your babies are adorable!!! Especially Tuki!

Here are all 3 of my shelter dogs. Sasha, Kitchi and Fizban. As you can see they get along quite well.

Re: Shelter dogs - post yours

Thank you, she is a sweetheart. They were going to euthanize because of her "aggressive" behavior, which included busting out of her cage and running around like a wild pig to play with the other dogs, and she would vocalize very loudly when she saw another dog.
What a reason to kill an 11mo puppy for o_O
