This is from an email. The contact person is the vet who wrote this, her number is below:
I am a veterinarian from St. Paul, Minnesota. I volunteer my services to a local rescue group here that has a relationship with an animal shelter in Harlan, Kentucky (long story). We were in Kentucky this weekend for a spay/ neuter program, and to bring dogs from the shelter back to Minnesota to find them new homes. We took 30+ dogs, and arranged to have another 30+ moved to a few other rescue groups in the country. While we were there, we met a wonderful male German Shepherd Dog named Max. He is huge, probably 100 lbs+. He is intact as well. He has been at the shelter for 6 weeks or more. We did not have the space to bring him back with us, or a foster home that will take a dog as big as he is, but I am trying to find out if there is another rescue group that could help him.
About him: I brought him outside for a walk, and once he settled down, he put his big, giant head in my lap and wagged his tail. I think he would have stayed that way for hours, if I'd had the time. I did an exam on him, including looking in his mouth and touching his scrotum (I know, oh gross), but he didn't object at all (I have found that touching a male dog's scrotum is a good way to determine personality with humans). He was sweet and submissive the whole time. He is so beautiful, and seems to have a wise soul in his body. He seems a little hyper at first, but any dog that is put in a run for 6 weeks and not walked goes a little stir-crazy, as I'm sure you are all aware. The shelter staff said that he is not good with cats and dogs smaller than him, but how can you judge that from behind kennel bars? He is one of the most gorgeous animals I've ever seen.
If anyone thinks they can help, have them call me at 651-335-5305. On the shelter's Petfinder website, there is mention of how rescue groups can go about moving a dog out of the facility as well. I am willing to contribute money to whomever can donate services (probably $100.00 or so, if this helps with gas money, etc). It is not the best shelter in the world, but we have a great relationship with this place, and need it to stay this way. It is important not to criticize, but to recognize that they are doing all they can to cooperate with us and other groups to give the animals all the chances possible at adoption.
