Lots of prayers coming from WA too, Rosa.

I know what it's like to have sick kids and not know what's wrong.

I presume they've run a CBC to rule out renal failure? When will blood work come back? That can help diagnose CHF in that CHF can cause renal failure and renal failure can result in CHF. (Renal failure shows up in blood work). But if we can get the dog out of crisis, then we can often manage both, balancing the meds very carefully. If the EKG can't be done, can they shoot a couple quick xrays? CHF is often seen in xrays (the edema is visible). A radiologist can usually see it very easily.

For reference, this shows how it is visible in human xrays: http://www.learningradiology.com/medstudents/recognizingseries/recogchfflashpage.htm

There could be a third factor -- perhaps pancreatitis, poisoning or something like that -- that's started all of this. Have you noticed ANYTHING unusual in terms of stools (soft, yellow, greasy)? Has his appetite been off? Any chance that he could have gotten into something in your house or yard? (The garbage, especially any fatty foods? Medicines? Pesticides, herbicides, or?)

Can someone go through your house and yard and look for anything that has been disturbed, or any evidence of vomiting (esp bloody vomit)?

Perhaps there's something that we're not seeing that might be helpful. So it might be worth a second look.

So much good information and so many wonderful prayers. They are still waiting for him to calm down and now I understand better why (can't get idea if his heart is racing cause he's excited).

I have placed another call to the Vet. I had been making Salt Dough Ornaments over the weekend....its possible he ate one of those. I know he didn't get the painted ones as I had them placed someplace else but the unpainted ones I had left on the dining room table. I let the Vet know this when I called. It is a real long shot but def worth mentioning.

There was a dead mouse in the yard Sunday morning and I told the Vet about this. My friend (who lives across the street) was telling me about how she's had mice, so I fiquired I should get some bait too. First, I am 100% positive that he didn't get into that. I put the bait in the garage and my dogs have never been in the garage. But I did see the deceased Sunday morning. It was in tack so I burried it away from my yard and in a place it could not be accessed by my dogs. I mentioned this to the Vet because I knew if anyone had been playing with the dead mouse it would have been Eli.

I did go back home after going to the Hospital this morning and carefully checked the yard...there was nothing else there. If there had been anything else before I would have caught it when I do my poop runs. All poop looked fine this morning.

Yes, they are running a full CBC panel. Renal failure was one of my first thoughts.

Thanks so much for your ideas/suggestions and most of all-your prayers and good thoughts.

I'll keep you posted.

Oh Rosa, I'm so sorry to hear that Eli is ill. I hope you have some good news for us soon.

I'm printing all this and taking it with me to the Vets. Any suggestions will be helpful. He's never had a tick on him, should I still worry about those type diseases?

Rosa, is he running a fever? I think I'd be inclined to run a lepto titer just to rule that out. In No Cal, it's a possibility....

And yeah, even if you've never seen a tick doesn't mean he hasn't picked one up and then shed it. I don't trust ticks. They're nasty little critters.

When my kids crash, I start my list...what can I start to rule out? It's a kind of expensive way to do things, but I want to rule out big things without being invasive. So if I can draw blood and send it out and rule out ten or so major (but somewhat probable) diseases, then I do so. Sometimes, we just get the peace of mind by ruling things out. But sometimes, we land on something that none of us (the internist, my regular vet and I) never really expected would be the cause of the crisis.

Blood test. Lateral, abdominal and chest xrays, then ultrasound if we can't figure it out with the xrays. That gives us a good plan of attack and none of it is very invasive. As long as my pup can tolerate this well, is staying hydrated, isn't in pain (or his pain is being managed), I like to get a big picture plan and try to narrow in on what could be going on.

It's hard when we look at something like a rapid heartbeat and wonder what is going on. It could really be almost anything. That's why I like working with a big picture specialist like an internist and a radiologist and try to wade through all of the data until we find the disease (or trauma).

I guess it's like looking at the forest from a helicopter and trying to see what trees are on fire vs looking at one tree and then trying to figure out if that tree is the source of the fire, or if it's simply just a tree that was in the wrong place when the forest caught fire.

Does that make sense?

Eli and Rosa, hang in there, positive healing prayers sent your way!
