Leaving puppy in crate at night?

I have a 6 1/2 month old and a new 8 week old... Shaw my 6 1/2 month old has been sleeping in the bed with us (which maybe I should not be allowing to happen? ) but now with Elsa we have tried the bed and the crate, seems to sleep longer in the crate.

My only question is should I continue using the crate at night? I don't want this to create behavior issues later in life for her. She is already in the crate 4 hours during the day due to work. They are both out for the rest of the day and we play and go on walks. Just want to make sure I am handling this the correct way?

Thanks!!!

Brady said in the crate all night until he was 2 and could be trusted.

Morgan was in her crate at night until she was 4. I would have trusted her at 2 but Luther was never crated they used to fight for the favorite spots. She still likes her crate, it's setup in the basement and she goes in for a nap sometimes.

Crates are wonderful, helpful tools...if not for the dogs anymore, in my case, just for the bunny lol, you're going about it in the correct way, that obviously suits your dogs! :)

I will continue to put them both in crates.

Thank you so much for the help!!!
The separation issue argument pertains to when you (we) leave them in the crate while we are away. And you are right to not trust the "don't leave in the crate argument"

Lance is six months. I just started leaving the crate door open and I do allow him on the bed. He usually gets down and goes in the crate on his own within a half hour. And sleeps in it all night without the need for me to close the door anymore.

Ilan has not been crated at night since she was 8 months old. (We started by shutting our bedroom door so she was contained with us at night.) She is 2 1/2 now, and happily sleeps with us, however, her crate is in our room and the door always open. She prefers to get up and sleep there if the bed gets too full of cats for her!

If you are gone, you are gone. I'd rather the dog be safe and secure in a crate during that time. I find my dogs enjoy their crates. Argo was crated until he was 2 then started being allowed out at night. I still crate him occasionally. Eris is 2 and is still crated. She doesn't usually rest until she goes in it. =p

Rather then start a new topic... Since it pertains to the same issue, the crate... I thought I would pick your guys brain for a little more advise.

My 8wk old Elsa is having a very hard time with potty training in the crate. I work from 7:30-4 but I do come home at lunch time to let them out. I have her on a very strict water schedule and she still is messing in the crate quite often. Thankfully my 7mo old was the easiest to train... Only one time in his crate and that was totally my fault! But my question is would it be better to put her in a bathroom with a potty pad and get her using that and then introduce her back to the crate when trained there? I just don't want her to learn anymore then she has that it's okay to potty in the crate. I do have a large crate that I keep them both in together but divided and she only has enough room to turn around in. Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

Very young puppies will fail very often and you have to be cleaning all the time but are part of the natural learning process, if you clean their space as soon as you can and create the discipline of going out they should be able to learn to “hold it” till you come back or let them out. Dogs by nature are clean animals, they don’t like to live in the dirt, I am pretty sure if any “accident” occurs at night your puppy will cry for help, my girl did, while your puppy is growing will learn to hold it longer and longer.
I don’t recommend using the Training pad; usually turns in a very tasty thing to rip out and puppies really enjoy to be messing with that when they are bored.
You will end up with a ripped training pad and poop and pee on the floor.
The crate is a lot easier to clean unless the poor doggie has diarrhea and splash around the accident; I know this for a fact.

Hope this help.

My dog spends all night in her crate but wakes up like an alarm clock at 6:00AM wanting to come out of her crate. In the evening she climbs up on our bed and rests/sleeps then she usually gets down and goes into her crate if the door is open. She is 9 1/2 months old. I let her out at 6:00 for potty time, feeding, ball play and training until 7:30 when I go to work. My wife is home with her but she still spends a lot of time in her crate during the day. I noticed that less time in her crate during the day and she is much better behaved at night when I get home, less chewing and mischief. I am planning to build an indoor kennel in the garage for her to stay in during the day when she is not in the house as soon as I can make some room. Since I'm in a townhouse the infamous homeowners association probably won't let me build a kennel on our back deck.

why does your dog have to be in the garage in a kennel if your wife is home???

Do you have bedding in the crate? My girls, when learning to hold it, have no bedding to absorb any accidents.
