This is the beginning of his tracking as he works it out in his own. I use wher I stand to draw him to it and away from the other track, but that’s about all the help he’ll get right now. We’ll probably do a few more like this before I make them not focused. It’s interesting to watch him organically find the tracks and learn they have value.

Hey bear I started tracking while Ellie is on rest, I started with the markos video at canemo.. I now essentially straddle (leg on either side so she can’t turn) her making sure she stays straight as the video says.. do I keep doing this until she doesn’t get the urge to turn around or go side to side and back track, or go off track? When do I give slack and let her go on her own? She will always get to the end of the track but she will blow by the odd piece of food if I don’t pull down on the lead to bring it to her attention.. I feel like if I give her slack she may get side tracked, literally.. do I keep at it this way for a while?

Food in each step. I use a heel strike, then drag my foot back slightly to make a pocket at the front for the food. Then I drop it in. The two most important parts at this stage for me are laying a track that is easy to distinguish and making sure it’s baited properly. It’s more important to make sure you aren’t leaving food outside the track than it is making sure every step is baited. You see here he’s only doing one set of steps for at least parts of it. It’s not a big deal right now. I’ll probably do food in the heek and toe next time to see how he responds.

It's so different than teaching tactical tracking to green dogs where the goal is finding the bad guy and not nose deep footstep to footstep.

Skipping steps, air scenting, nose not deep, circling corners, overshooting corners, change of pace, missing articles. I believe those are the big scoring criteria where you lose points. Bear was pretty methodical and the easy to track. Cion was like a race car in a run way. With Cion specifically, if he hits a corner go fast, he’ll circle. The speed can lead to crooked article indications. He will occasionally start air scenting. I think I’ve come through most of those for his next trial. AKC tracks are laid differently and judged less strictly. They are also adding main trailing, which ytgey can do however they want.
