Hi,

Its been a while since I've posted here, busy summer! Duke's 2 now and not nearly as destructive as he was a yr ago ( knock on wood ). Anyway he has an XL wire type kennel for our room when its bed time, he's getting big which the kennel is up to a 150 pd dog but I thought maybe its time he had more room to stretch & be comfy!

So, this is what I did last night please let me know if you think this is the right way to approach it ? last night, I cleaned all of his bedding, moved the kennel to the side a little more but left the door open, let him check it out well before bed time so when it was bed time, I put him in a down position & told him ok & good boy and climbed into bed myself & he can see me still so he stayed for a few min's then left to go to his kennel, that's fine I figure that's his comfort zone, later I got up & came back right back to bed, at that time he checked out a couple of spots in the room and laid outside of the kennel of his choice & I didn't say a word trying to pretend I Was still sleeping. Should I just let him find his own comfort zone ?

sorry for this being long winded, I hope this makes sense LOL.

Huh? LOL
I think you're trying to see if he's ready to sleep outside of his crate?
Usually at night they know it's time to sleep, my 6 month old puppy is ready to sleep outside of her crate IMO, so I let her and she's fine.

Yes, let him find his own comfort zone. It will help him go to sleep when it is bed time because he is in a comfortable spot of his choice.

With my dogs, I pretty much let them determine the spot they sleep. I set the ground rules (they aren't allowed to sleep in certain rooms), but then it is up to them where they sleep. I have noticed that some of my dogs will sleep in the same spot all night, while others seem to sleep in multiple spots throughout the night.

I let mine pick where they will sleep. My house is small so there are no limits, other than not in bed with me. They move from time to time thru the night. This morning I woke up to find them both on the floor next to the bed. That's fine too for me, as long as they move so I can make it to the bathroom...

My pup started sleeping in the room with us outside her crate when she turned 7 months. We bought her a pillow bed and placed it in the room where we noticed she would sleep from time to time (during the day). That said, she always gets up and goes in the bathroom and lays on the tiles.. The bedroom is carpet and she probably likes the cool file of the tiles.

Her bed is mainly used by us to let her know it is time to go to bed. We say "go to bed" and there she goes...lays on her pillow, we turn off the lights and may be 5-10 minutes later she leaves the room and goes the bathroom (bathroom is conected to bedroom).

She did have fun one morning with my rug in the bathroom...so I am working on that with her!

Ok, thanks! I'd give him free roam of the house but he's one that will get into the garbage can or mess with the cat so who knows what would happen, him being in the same room at least he's limited but not in his kennel either. I didn't have this problem with our last GSD he'd sleep anywhere in the house & not bug a thing. ITs hard to let them know it was a no-no he got into the garbage, cat, etc when we are sleeping.

He's still VERY hyper, he see's a reflection / shadow on the wall and he's going nuts then proceeds to chase his tail repeatedly, crazy!

I have let Ginger sleep in my room un-crated since I got her. When I picked her up she was a little under a year old, sometimes she sleeps on her bed on the ground, if my GF isnt there, she knows she can jump up in bed with me, but she waits til I am in and then makes her move... she wants to know where I am going to lay before she lays down...

The last couple nights I have let her sleep in my daughters room, she actually prefers this as I leave the TV on for a while... One night when I was making my way to bed Ginger was already sleeping on her bed, I came in and turned the TV on, she got up, and went to the bathroom door where it was dark... little princess.

With our puppies we start with a pen in the bedroom for about the first month until they are old enough to make it all night without a potty break. Then we do the same thing you did. We start leaving the pen door open and they can choose to sleep in there or elsewhere in the bedroom but do not have access to the full house during the night. It does not take them long to find a favorite spot on our bed or one of the dog beds laying beside our bed. Then the puppy pen goes back in storage. Congrats to Duke on being a good boy and earning free range status in the bedroom at night

We will be doing this again tonight, its funny because at nap time during the day when the kids are sleeping when he wa a puppy he'd be on a long lead and sleep in 1 area, now he's able to be off the leash but still sleeps on the tile at nap time, so he naps at the same time my little ones do, its so funny how he knows its nap time & stays there even when I leave the room
