Hello, we just built an outdoor kennel/run for our dog to stay and play in while we are out of town and have a pet sitter come and take care of her. Otherwise she really isn’t out there unless we have a lot of people visiting and needs to be put up.

I’m wondering what we can use to put down on the ground as flooring. The kennel is 15’x50’ and is located in an area that has a lot of shade for the most part. We cut out an area with lots of trees on both sides so we took out all the grass and weeds since there was a lot of poison ivy mixed in as well. That’s all gone now and the ground is pretty bare, basically dirt. I can’t stand to put her out there on dirt and want something that will be clean and also not be muddy if it rains. It’s a big area so concrete would be $$$. We are in Central Texas so afraid that horse mats would be too hot on her feet. Was told to stay away from pea gravel and mulch. But wasn’t sure if pure cedar mulch would be ok. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Thank you. I’m worried that the black mats would be very hot during the summer??? Then again I have no idea. She has a raised cot bed and an insulated house so she wouldn’t really be laying around on the ground. She’d only be out there primarily when we are away. I thought about putting down landscaping fabric and then cedar shaving on top of that but not sure how that would be if it’s rains and gets wet.

I once had a couple of kennels with flat concrete blocks as the base. They were maybe 6x12x1.5 inches each? Been a minute, and I speculate it wasn't very cheap, but I'm sure it was less than pouring a slab. Just as a warning, it's probably been 15 years, and you can still see them long after the kennels were removed. I'd say the earth will have swallowed them up entirely in another 10. But they did work well.

Our outdoor kennel has a mix of straw, mulch, and cedar chips. The cedar chips repel insects and can be purchased in large compressed bricks at pet supply stores. The issue with mulch is it's chock full of some wicked splinters unless you go for "playground mulch" which has smooth edges. Our dogs are only out there if we need to be be gone most of the day.
