Is she just a picky eater?

Ok, so this is my first post, please bear with me. I have a GSD who is 3 (4 in january) and i've had her since she was 3 1/2 weeks old (believe it or not..) There are times when Nica just does not want to eat. This then results in her vomiting bile and then becomming very lethargic. This does not happen all the time, but probably at least 6 or 7 times a year. Keep in mind, I usually panic and end up taking her to the vet for fluids. Most of the time, she eats fine. There are days when she only eats half her food in the morning and none at night, or vice versa. Does anyone else have this happen with their shepherds? I've been thinking about getting her in for a complete physical and bloodwork to make sure nothing is wrong, but every time i ask the vet about it, they tell me she really shouldn't need it, and that her stomache is just upset. Any ideas?

Take her to the vet for a full work up.

Marshall had that same problem for about a week or so and he turned out to have a kidney infection.

Any time they're feeling discomfort, even if it's not visible to you, they may not want to eat because of it. I'd get her checked out. It may be nothing....it is normal for dogs to go thru short spurts where they eat less or skip a meal...but if it's repeating there may be a problem. Better safe than sorry.

If your vet isn't meeting your needs and concerns I'd flat out find another vet.

My dog will throw up bile if she doesn't eat frequently enough. She's been checked by a vet and nothing was wrong, it's just a matter of keeping on top of when she is eating. She is also very picky, but I've found that just a small piece or 2 of chicken gets her started and then she will eat her whole meal. Others on this forum have had similar problems, and the solution is the same, make sure they eat more often.
Your problem doesn't sound like something I would worry about, but if you can afford that piece of mind, a full work up couldn't hurt.

I think that heading to the vet, when you find a good one, for a full work up to rule out any health problems should be first. Jerzey is also a picky eater and, some days, will throw up bile rather than eat the food that is sitting right in front of her on the floor. I just don't understand it. If she's VERY persistent with her not-eating I hand feed her a few pieces. Once she starts eating she always just finishes the rest.

I have a very thin two-year-old German Shepherd who has me in tears most days because of his refusal to eat. He is recently recovering from a mesenteric torsion but was picky before that as well. I understand mesenteric torsion can happen to skinny German shepherds. I feed him Evo, Before Grain, home cooked everything - it doesn't matter. He will go two days without eating and then decide to eat for a couple of days and then go on strike. I don't know if he's picky or what but he is painfully thin. I am so worried that he will get sick.

A lot of people swear by Satin Balls, and say that when all else fails this works. This recipe isn't meant to be an indefinite meal replacement, but can be used to intermittently stimulate a picky - or off his oats because he's been sick - dog to take in nourishment. Generally weight goes on in a hurry with this recipe, so that is another plus for a fellow that's seriously underweight.

The only caveat with this recipe would be if your dog is allergic to cereal grains.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the recipie! I made a batch Saturday and of course had to use it last night!

She didn't want to eat again, this is the first time it's been so close in episodes so i am making a vet appt this week, but when she didnt want to eat i gave her a little bit of the recipie and she ate it and about 15 minutes later she went to her bowl and ate her entire meal.

dont know what's up with my girl, but i intend to find out once and for all!

thanks again!!
