xylitol
AVOID THESE BRANDS OF PEANUT BUTTER!
  • Go Nuts, Co.
  • Krush Nutrition
  • Nuts ‘N More
  • P28
  • No Cow (previously called D’s Naturals)
Read labels and ingredient lists carefully!
DO NOT assume that “all natural” or “no artificial sweeteners” on the label means that it is safe for your dog. Xylitol is technically considered by the FDA to be an “all natural” sweetener.

The majority of peanut butter brands have no xylitol. Avoid the no sugar types.

If you'd like a lower fat kong to chew on, you can get canned (pure) pumpkin at the grocery store, put in, freeze, and give. Applesauce too (no sugar added).

The only thing we use JIF peanut butter for is mouse traps. IMHO It is not fit for human or dog consumption. If you do want to use peanut butter, look at health food stores selling organic peanuts that allow you to grind the peanuts on site making your own peanut butter with nothing else added. If you are giving your dog a tiny amount, you could afford this.
Non organically grown peanuts have one of the highest levels of pesticides in the food industry. Definitely something to stay away from.
And thanks to those of you for the heads up on Xylitol. I had completely forgotten that. And do be careful reading labels. A LOT is hidden in blanket statements that sound benign.

My dogs always liked peanut butter as a treat. When they were pups, I cored out apples and stuffed with peanut butter and froze it helped soothe their sore gums. Almond butter is healthier alternative it’s delicious it’s just grounded up almonds and tastes so good and without sugars and has good fats. Costco is my favorite place to get almond butter for the price. Cashew butter is another one which homemade cashew butter can be hard to share.

My lab gets a kong every day. He loves it. I put a little bit of canned food in for him and just count it as part of his daily calories. I weigh him weekly. Keep him right about 70lb, which is a healthy weight for him. If he ever starts gaining I just cut him back a little. I am determined to have the one english lab in the world who isn't fat lol.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a daily kong as long as either whatever's in there is part of the dog's daily food or the dog is active enough to afford empty calories. The only time my lab can eat whatever he wants is during dock diving weather when he is swimming every day because he gets ribby fast doing that.

Mine get some peanut butter frozen in a toy for a bed time wind down. It is made by Smuckers and is nothing but peanuts and salt, no sugar. Since the peanut oil separates I shake up the jar before I open it for the first time and then afterwards store it in the fridge. It is about a 1 1/2 tsp of P,nut butter that gets frozen in the toy for them to lick and chew on at bed time. Yes, I spoil my dogs a bit.
