I know I know this isn’t a typical GSD sport so interest may be minimal but I’m actually asking for my retriever.. but I know in time Ellie will get into it and probably thrive on one upping him lol. My dog jumps great, he jumped 15ft second time off the dock.. the problem is, he has no interest in anything I’m throwing or actually retrieving it. I used his chuck it ball today which is his highest reward, and is very good at fetch and retrieve on land.. so it’s limiting his launch because he isn’t jumping up for it, any tips or experiences would be great. I think it’s a super fun summer sport, and dogs love it.
Thanks!

@BigOzzy2018
The Oz Man is a dock diving champ. And a handsome one who looks great doing anything. Lol.

And someday he will sire puppies and I will bring one home and I will call her The Ultimate Sin!
Thanks Sabi. Ozzy has his first competition of the season next month and of course State Fair.

Ozzy has a blast dock diving. Not many GSD jump his length let alone compete. Ozzy won’t do laps in water he just goes for thrills of getting his toy. Excellent swimmer though. Dog must have ball drive and the desire to retrieve and return. What did u use to get him to jump 15ft?

Thanks @Sabis mom , and @BigOzzy2018 , just his want and will to go in the water. I line him up at end of dock down stay I go to end and say GO and he fly’s in.. I toss his ball or a water kong as he goes but he doesn’t even look at it. He loves his ball, on land it’s an obsession and only given at special times when we interact. He’ll eventually pick it up in water after he’s done his paw splashing ordeal.. is it maybe just time and repetition? He’s e-collar trained, I planned on maybe creating a new recall for water and training him in water for recall like I did on land? You can see from this pic he’s missing that jump for the launch angle to get more distance.

They need to learn to track the toy. I started in the lake. You can start on the dock as well, have the dog closer to the edge show him the toy go up and down with the toy to see if he is watching the toy. Send him for the jump throw toy slowly and see what happens. You can also take a class for dock diving.
