Chicken allergy

My 7 Mo. old GSD had red bumps & spots of hair loss. The vet gave me antihistimine pills that did nothing for her. A friend told me to try taking her off dog food with chicken as a main ingrediant. After a week all red bumps were gone and her fur came back in nicely a short time later. It's hard finding chicken free dog food. Ive been feeding her Taste of the wild lamb & wild rice, but she's getting tired of it and I have to put on a little bacon greese to get her to eat it. Surfing the web looking for a good alternative is really frustrating. The ratings on dog food differ wildly & most have chicken. Does anyone here have a similar problem or able to offer any help?
Thanks, Lloyd

When you switch a dog from one kibble to another you really aren't just changing ONE ingredient (the chicken in your case). You need to compare ALL the ingredients in two foods and see what's different.

Having an allergy to a protein is rare in dogs. Yes, it does happen but you can't make that judgement using kibble.

Look for a fish based, grain free, limited ingredient food.

I see more people post that their dogs stop eating TOTW after a bit and have to add toppings. Mine did too. My feeling is if you have to bribe your dog with toppings to get them to eat the food, maybe the problem is actually the food.

Thanks for the reply. I was feeding her Blue Buffalo Chicken & Brown Rice Lg breed puppy. So it could be any one of several ingredients. Not sure but it sounds like I need to make a list of what is different, take it to the vet & have allergy tests done.

I was feeding my pup Canidae chicken and rice and was dealing with itchy skin, and runny poop after a few vet visits and coming back neg on all tests giving meds just in case I changed his food to Canidae bison and lamb and the itchy skin and runny poop is gone. I can't feed him any chicken based products .
