It seems as there are a few of us with our dogs having a bout of Pano and a thread had me thinking....

I have switched Jake over to TOTW while I continue to research and learn about RAW feeding. On occasion I give Jake a RAW meal....before I made the recent switch to TOTW he was feed BB LB and then Acana, these changes were do to itchy skin, dandruff, inflamed ear and never good stools. Since the move to TOTW all is GREAT, but now he has a mild bout of Pano.

If high protein and calcium are the big culprits then seems like all the folks out there weening pups to RAW would all Pano.

I don't want to cause a *hit storm but I really want to understand if the food is bringing on the Pano, if it is I will run out and get some SD or something at Petsmart and stick it out another year....and take him of a good quality grain free food....and well I guess Jake can forget having Raw for quite some time as well.

My moms GSD had Pano really bad. I think it could just be the dog because she actually had him on Science Diet low residue food while he was a puppy because he had severe digestion problems and that was the only food that helped him. That food cant have nearly as much vitamins in it as the raw or TOTW. The breeder where I got Brody from has always had her pups on TOTW and raw here and there as you do. I would think if it was really bad she would switch them. My moms GSD had Pano so bad that he was on pain pills here and there...if he jumped on you or ran into you he would cry so horrible...it mad me cry one time I hope you Jake feels better! Give him a hug for me. I too am doing a little bit of raw and kibble like you are until I have a better understanding of complete raw. I ordered a couple books off of amazon that will hopefully explain more to me! Good luck!!

My breeder and my vet both told me that feeding puppy food can cause them to grow too fast, making getting Pano more likely. But then how do pups on a raw diet get pano?

It depends on WHICH puppy food you are feeding...only a few have the right ratios for proper growth which has all been discussed previously here.
The raw diet had the right ratio of calcium/phosphorus and is really a perfect diet if the owner is feeding correct balances and portions.
The dogs that get Pano may be larger in structure and have noticable growth spurts. Diet isn't a part of the equasion in those cases.
If you feed an appropriate large breed puppy kibble then you are doing all you can to prevent it. Some dogs will get it regardless.
