I can't believe some of the [email protected] that goes on around here, in such a small town! I feel so much safer with Kodee in the house, now that he's getting more watchful. The last couple of times someone came over, he barked like he was going to eat them when they came to the door. I really like this, especially since he quiets when I tell him to (he just turned a year old). I really like the security he makes me feel now. I'm home alone a lot w/3 kids 6 and under. Last week, my neighbor came rushing over (I didn't hear the phone when he called), to tell me to lock the house up and keep the kids away from windows, etc. The police were looking for a guy who had broken into a cops' house here in town (less than 2 miles from our houses) while the cop was out of town on vacation. The cop's son went to the house to check on it, and just happened to walk in on the burglar, and was shot! They had helicopters literally over my house looking for the guy. Thankfully the man who was shot is going to be ok. The guy hasn't been caught, at least not as of yesterday's news reports. They had dogs tracking him about 1-1/2 miles from here, but the dogs lost his scent at the highway, so I'm guessing he had his car there waiting or something.

Anyway, from that night on Kodee has been sleeping with free run of the house, and I am so glad he's behaving so far. He used to sleep in my room, but I kept my door closed so he couldn't wander at night. Now that's exactly what I want him to do! LOL! Does anyone else let their dog do this? Kodee still chooses to sleep next to my bed in my room, but if someone tried to come in, he'd let me know for sure, and hopefully scare them off before they got in.

I think Kodee is the only reason I sleep so well at night anymore!

Once Shilo hit a year, she has had free rein of the house at night. And she will let me know when something is hinkey. Like the time my door bell rang at 4 am. Man, I had never seen her act the way she did. The trooper at the door knew she was there.

my storm is the same exact way. VERY protective. it was thought that he was a bit fear aggressive in the beginning. i took him for training and now that he is a year old, is still very protective but is socialized. he is just very wary of strangers. once you are his friend, you are his friend, but if not look out!!! he will absolutely not let anyone near our fence. my hubbie leaves for work every nite at 3 in the morn, i am also home alone with 2 kids 10 and 14. there are a lot of unscrupulous people around my neighborhood. although it is pretty safe, i too feel way, way more secure with him around.

Sarge has full run of the house all the time. If he hears something outside at night he comes to my bed and barks just a little to wake me up. I get up and say to him...show me!! He goes to where he heard the noise so I can check it out. If he goes to the back door we both go outside to see whats going on. After hes satisfied eveything is ok he settles right down.

I let my dogs have free range at night and now onxy is uncrated this summer during the day, as the kids are home and we all come and go. Lately there have been daytime break-ins,even w/ kids home(Friday two kids locked themselves in a closet and called their dad as the house was being intruded-upscale home) and I feel much more comfortable if my dogs are able to actually get to the doors, rather than just barking thru crate bars. We have woods backed up to our house, with a busy two lane highway about 5 acres north, so it would be easy for someone to come in from the back. Love the secure feeling of the presence of GSD's!

In the last few weeks, 3 people we know have had their houses broken into. (All within a few miles of our house, some right down the road) With my mom gone a lot of the nights and some nights having nobody in the house, Chance really brings some comfort to me. He lets us know when someones here before they can even get out of their car and to the door! Anyone who didn't know him sure wouldn't want to enter our house. His bark is maturing a LOT (13 months) and he has a very deep, aggressive sounding bark and it's not just a random bark here and there, it's serious barkbarkbarkbarkbarkbarkbark over and over again until I tell him to stop. (Not to mention the 3 ankle biters there to back him up. He can go for the top half and they can go for the pant legs.
)

He doesn't roam the house during the night because my mom would have a fit about that and I don't like my door to stay open but we're at the front of the house so whenever I hear someone coming in late at night or when I'm home alone during the day, I send Chance to the door first to scare off anyone who shouldn't be there.

Chance is my Golden Retriever wanna-be. He's a huge people-dog and loves everyone he meets but don't think for a second he's not going to let EVERYONE know if you're at the door.
