I am no expert on this but we also have a motherly female age 6 and she wants nothing to do with other females. This just may be her though. She took to our male GS with little resistence. We also had a very active male who did not like other males but took to every female he saw. Do you know of anyone who has younger dogs of both sexes to test them with in a neutral meeting place?
