I’m driving myself nuts. LJ (age 12.5) is getting old. She hesitates to go up stairs and isn’t as active as she used to be. I spoke with the vet last week and she suggested that I increase LJ’s Omega-3 intake. Right now she gets 1 teaspoon of Wholistic Salmon Oil a day. She eats TOTW Pacific Stream.

Also:
raw local honey, 2 t
local bee pollen, 2 t
cetyl myristoleate 2,280 mg
ester-c 2,000 mg
Glucosamine 1,500 mg
Chondroitin sulfate 1,050 mg
MSM 1,800 mg
Vitamin E 400 IU
Wholistic Digest All 1 t

Wholistic Salmon Oil
Nutritional Analysis: One tsp equals
4700 mg of Salmon Oil
Omega-3 1255 mg
DHA 423 mg
EPA 441 mg
DPA 172 mg
Vitamin E 1095 ppm
EPA min 8%
DHA min 12%

****************************************
Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream
Omega-6 Fatty Acids 2.4% min
Omega-2 Fatty Acids 0.3% min

So, should I increase her salmon oil to 2 teaspoons per day,

or –

try Carlson Labs Norwegian Salmon Oil capsules?

Supplement Facts
Serving Size: 2 Softgels
Omega-3 Fatty Acids 750 mg
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) 360 mg
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) 250 mg

I think she would need 8 per day. She currently weights 85 pounds. She’s a big girl.

Any thoughts?

Joanne

Re: Wholistic Salmon Oil or Carlson Norw Salmon Ca

My dogs don't do well on salmon oil, BUT, when I did try them, this is what I looked for.

Notice that the Salmon Oil above has 4700mg per tsp, but only 1255 mg is omega-3 fatty acids? I always wonder what the rest is made up of?

the Salmon Capsules have 750mg of O-3, but you'd have to look at the total fat of the serving size to get the mg of total oil.

I always look for the highest proportion of O-3, if possible. I would look for the one that would have the least amount of mercury.

The Wholistic is higher in DHA, while the Carlson is higher in EPA. I believe that the DHA is more protective of the nerves, eyes, brain, and DHA has been talked about more than the EPA lately, but for the purpose you are giving it, you might want to do a search and see if you want more of the DHA or EPA.

And remember to increase slowly -- too much oil can be hard for some dogs to handle.

Re: Wholistic Salmon Oil or Carlson Norw Salmon Ca

I did some research.

EPA is very effective in combating inflammation and protecting against cancer, as well as preventing and managing cardiovascular disease.

DHA plays an important role in vision and brain function as well as keeping the heart healthy.

Both companies claim that their product is free of "detectable" heavy metals and pollutants.

The capsules are 1,000 mg of salmon oil and LJ would be taking 8 per day. Poor poochie, soon her supplements will out number her kibble!

I would choose the product with the most DHA and EPA for the least cost.

Carlson's also has a super potent oil: http://www.vitacost.com/Carlson-Super-Omega-3-Fish-Oils

The link above from vitacost has great pricing and $4.99 shipping for all orders regardless of weight/size- so stock up to reduce cost
