So after some trouble with the snap on leashes, I decided to go with a martingale for walking. My confusion though is where should the martingale fit on the neck? Up high, in the middle, lower on the neck like her regular buckle collar, or does it not matter?

Also, would you recommend the martingale in 1", 1.5", or 2" size?

I would like it so her fur doesn't stick up too badly, but I don't want it so large that it overtakes her whole neck.

Lily right now is 6 months old, just under 50 pounds, so I would like something that she can grow into too.

My Kenya is full grown and her nylon Martingale is 3/4". It blends in pretty well. She has a 1.5" but it's very visble and kinda makes her fur stick straight out.

I don't think it matters where it fits since it's not intended for correction. As long as when fully tight, the dog can't slip OR get choked, it's fine.

The martingale should fit high up on the neck as most collars should. It should fit so it will snug a little if needed (for instance if the dog tries to back out of it, or if they pull) but not tighten a lot around the neck.

The martingale stops from the collar from continuing to tighten more and more like a choker will. It allows some firmness without choking or slipping off the dog.

Any collar allowed to ride lower on a dog's neck is less effective since they are more muscled there.

I agree with Bonnie, it should be up high on the neck as all collars should. Ivy wears a martingale collar and hers is 1.5'' if I remember correctly and like Lies said it blends in pretty well, and it's very visble. Ivy's martingale doesn't seem to make her hair stick out that much but it can all depend on the coat type as well.

Thanks for the information.

I got Lily a 1" Lupine nylon martingale collar. We used it on our walk this morning and I made sure to place it higher up on her neck. It did seem to slip down a bit on the neck after walking for a little while, but I think it just might be trial and error for me to see how snug it should fit. I keep Lily's regular buckle collar that I use for short outings where she is taken off leash fairly loose so I will probably just need to get used to the difference.

Lily is still learning how to walk nicely on a leash and I think the martingale will give me a bit more control than the flat collar. Hopefully anyways....
