Have picked out my new pup and have to decide when to bring him home. He'll be 8 weeks this weekend so I could bring him home on Monday. Problem is, I leave for vacation 9 days later for a week. I can bring him back to the breeder to board while away but wonder what's best. Does it make sense to bring him home and get him started on his new routine/house/crate training only to take him back to the breeder and have to start it all over again when I get back from vacation? I also have a 2 yr old female GSD so I want them to start bonding/getting to know each other. Will it be confusing to put them together only to separate them a week later? Or, would it be best to just wait until we get back from vacation to bring him home?

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sam if you can leave him with the breeder I would. We got our new pup 1 week before vacation. We decided not to take him because he didnt have his shot. Luckily we had someone to take care of him, but we did have to kind of start over with him when we got back.

Is he going to be getting socialized while he is at the breeders or will he just be alone in a kennel?

Funny you should ask Kandi, did this story sound familiar? I have pics and so do you! This is F Litter Brown (Falken's) new mom! It looks like most of the advice here is to wait to bring him home so I'm leaning in that direction. However, I like the suggestion of coming to visit him so I may be getting in touch with you to do that.

I don't know how to copy the pics from the email you sent so this is the one which I took today which came out (sort of).

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I'll be posting more pictures once I get to take some more!

I would question the breeder about how they socialize their pups and if they will work on socialization while they have him. 8 weeks is starting a very important socialization period.

The breeder says she would not be thrown into the "general population" but continue crate training, housebreaking as if he were home, with lots of "field trips" and outings and play time...to conintue socialization.

Introducing her new sidekick..Falken von Rokanhaus!

Congratulations Sam123 for your new family member who looks great and Kandi for finding a conscientous owner.

Take that vacation and let Kandi do her thing-as long as she takes a breather from posting for a while.
