My friend just adopted a dog. The shelter thought it was a Malinois but I don't agree. I'm no expert but the first thing I thought of when I saw him was GSD/Pitbull mix. What do you folks think?

Not a mal. The blocky head could come from a number of other breeds. Could be GSD with rottweiler or boxer (which would also be consistent with the brindling). Body shot would be more revealing. My guess is this boy has more than two breeds in him. Very nice coat!

He looks TALL so I'll guess mastiff and GSD.

I've seen a pup like this when I lived in Maine. I forget her name though? I think it was China?
She was a Lab/Chow/Pit X.
The owners were friend's with the people with her mother.
That part of Maine, not many will Spay/Nueter thier pets.

There's another body shot of him, but it's from overhead so the perspective isn't good. My friend says the pup is about 50lbs and a year old.

The head says pit bull more than GSD, except for the ears and muzzle length.

While very much believed and passed around, its false that if the dog has purple on their tongue they must be part chow.

With that tongue, I would say there is some Chow or Shar Pei in there somewhere down the line.
