My gsd Brutus is often mistaken for a simple black and tan, when he has allot more markings than a regular black and tan. Please share your opinions because I'm really curious. I think he may be a mix between melanistic and sable? But he is pb. (Also sorry if this is in the wrong category to ask, I'm new and couldn't really find a more similar topic to post on.)

I would say he is a Black and Tan with a bitch stripe(the sable down his back).

black and tan with poor pigment --- classic "bitch stripe"

you can not be a mix between a melanistic and a sable . You are either black and tan OR sable .
Melanistic refers to a black and tan with a majority of black coverage -- like a bi-colour but not quite
meeting the requirements of "bi-colour".
