I decided to quit Wolfies Obedience class. I emailed the club about the woman that assaulted Wolfie. they emailed me right back and said they were taking it seriously and would get back to me. The rules of the club state that you have 10 days from the start of the first class to withdraw for any reason to get a refund. Today was the 10th day, and still no word, so I emailed to withdraw from the lessons in order to ensure that I got a refund. I also think that if that woman is there, it is going to make me so upset that Wolfie will sense it, and that I won't be able to devote my full attention to his training which he deserves. I got this email back from them almost immediately

I am so sorry to hear that you are making that decision.. The OCOC was very concerned with what happened and none of us are taking this lightly. I will encourage you to fill out the survey that is on the web site and send it in. We are not only addressing your immediate concerns of Wolfe's correction, but the Board will also be addressing this at the next meeting. None of us on the Board condone the behavior of the woman that mis handled your dog. We understand your concerns and stress and can not apologize enough for her behavior.

I can tell you that it takes allot of time to train a dog and does not happen in a few short weeks. It is a hugh, life long commitment. What you are seeing in Wolfe's behavior now needs to be addressed. I can suggest that you have some private lessons to gain better obedience with Wolfe in a private less stressful setting and later move to a group to add the distractions and interactions, of course, with your instructors approval. Wolfe is a great dog and obviously very intelligent. Maybe even with Amanda? You seam to like her technique. Would you like me to put you in touch with her?

Please call me and we can talk more about helping you.

For now, I am forwarding my response to the rest of the Board as well as the treasurer for your refund. Thank you for training with us. I do hope to see you in the future. I wish you and Wolfe the best. I am sorry we were not able to help you.

Respectfully,

My reply:

I appreciate that the OCOC is taking my concerns seriously. My husband who is a Police officer wanted me to file a complaint with the Salisbury Police, but I wanted to see if the club would handle it. It seems that the club is at least addressing the situation and I appreciate that. I agree Wolfie is a great pup. I am aware of the commitment training a dog is. He is my third German Shepherd and my husband's fourth German Shepherd and we both are in agreement that he is exceptionally intelligent even in comparison to our previous German Shepherds. His problem is, in my opinion, that he gets excited seeing so many dogs in one closed in area. He is well socialized and does not behave like this when we are out walking , at the beach, at the pet store with other dogs around, or at the dog park. He does settle down and learn in class. All of his exercises are done well, except for his downs. He is very much an alpha dog. He is very different at home, and will do his downs immediately and with enthusiasm. We practice it on the beach, in the yard, at the dog park, and on our walks with no problem. I don't even need to offer treats. I was very surprised that he is having a hard time with this in class.
I will fill out the survey and send it in. I do have a suggestion for the club. Maybe the instructors and the officials could wear some sort of badges so that newcomers would know who everyone is. If I knew that the woman who assaulted my dog, and yelled at me was not an instructor, I would never have let her touch my dog, or yell at me in that manner. As it was, I was having a hard time with the fact that some one I thought to be a club official would scream at me that I wouldn't be allowed back or hurt my dog. If Amanda hadn't told me that she didn't know who that woman was, I would have went home then and there. I did have to laugh at the whole notion of the spray bottle as Wolfie loves to get sprayed in the face. Any chance he has to put his face in water spray, he takes.

I would like to know what Amanda charges for private instruction. you can give her my email so she can contact me. Thank you again for your help, and for the club's concern in this matter.

It wasn't worth it to me to drive 45 minutes away to be stressed out. There are so many clubs around here that I'm bound to find one that is a good fit for us. The only reason I went there in the first place was that I had a free year membership for buying Wolfie at that particular breeder, and I was very impressed with the breeders dogs, and their obedience. She had 6 dogs in the room at the time. She said platz and every one of her dogs went down in unison.

Thanks for updating us. I think you did the right thing.

If it was me, I couldn't help but think of the crazy lady at least once everytime I went to class. I just wouldn't want to transmit any bad vibes down the leash when I need to be in a calm, attentive state for the lesson.

I hope they kick that horrible person out of the club. She sounds truly unstable.

Anyway, good luck to you and Wolfie on finding a new place to train. Hopefully it works out much better than the previous one.

Really, they should have some sort of identification- I mean, we're way out in the ginky weeds and at least all the trainers at the obedience training club I belong to wear a shirt with the insignia and a name badge. The trainers have assistants that are also identified the same way, we're formally introduced the first night. How tough is that?

Glad you made the decision that feels right for you and Wolfie. I know you you are going to try and work with one of the trainers from OCOC, which sounds like a great idea. Still so sorry that this happened to you and Wolfie.

Wolfiesmom -what did that woman do to Wolfie? (I missed the original thread)
Some random woman in the advanced class, grabbed Wolfie by the prong collar and yanked it hard to try and correct his barking then she hit him in the face and screamed at me that I would never be allowed back. Then she grabbed a spray bottle and gave it to my instructor and told him to use it on him.

I'm glad you made the decision that will suit both you and wolfie. Heck I wouldn't want to drive 45 minutes stressing about what was to come either!

Your not near western mass are you? I love It'sPawsible /owner Beth Ostrowski is a wonderful trainer, very positive:) (she does have a website)

I don't recall, or missed it,,I wonder what breed of dog the idiot woman has? Just curious..

Good luck with the privates, but I have to say, in their email to you, it sounds like they are trying to 'push' privates on you..I don't know I just don't get a good vibe about that part of it. (money money)

Anyhow, good luck:)

No, I live 15 minutes north of Boston.

I had the same thought about the private lessons. I will talk to the trainer and see how much they charge, because seriously, he does everything that we do in class, at home or elsewhere in public, perfectly and on command. The distractions of so many other dogs is what gets him barking, and he only does it when we walk in the door, and until we start working. For example, if I walk in the door with him and took him directly to the work area to practice, he would stop barking. ( I did this after the incident with the woman ). It's like he is announcing to everyone, " Here I am, I can't pull my Mom over to sniff all you dogs, so I am using my bark to say hello!" So, I don't know how private lessons will help this? The woman has a Golden Retriever. The club can figure out who she is, because I know the name of her dog. EVERYONE knows the name of her poor dog because she screams his name all during training.

and it sounds like he would benefit MORE with those classes vs private lessons. I'd probably not go back, get a refund and look elsewhere,,CLASSES are supposed to be for untrained dogs (mostly) and heck they should be used to all kinds of ill mannered behaviors, that's why most go to classes, to work on those bad behaviors..Frankly I think they should unload that woman she had no business doing what she did.

ahhh,,Masi had negative golden encounters in puppy classes and to this day, she does NOT like goldens:( Poor dog, having to live with such a big mouth woman:(
