I decided to quit Wolfies Obedience class. I emailed the club about the woman that assaulted Wolfie. they emailed me right back and said they were taking it seriously and would get back to me. The rules of the club state that you have 10 days from the start of the first class to withdraw for any reason to get a refund. Today was the 10th day, and still no word, so I emailed to withdraw from the lessons in order to ensure that I got a refund. I also think that if that woman is there, it is going to make me so upset that Wolfie will sense it, and that I won't be able to devote my full attention to his training which he deserves. I got this email back from them almost immediately
I am so sorry to hear that you are making that decision.. The OCOC was very concerned with what happened and none of us are taking this lightly. I will encourage you to fill out the survey that is on the web site and send it in. We are not only addressing your immediate concerns of Wolfe's correction, but the Board will also be addressing this at the next meeting. None of us on the Board condone the behavior of the woman that mis handled your dog. We understand your concerns and stress and can not apologize enough for her behavior.
I can tell you that it takes allot of time to train a dog and does not happen in a few short weeks. It is a hugh, life long commitment. What you are seeing in Wolfe's behavior now needs to be addressed. I can suggest that you have some private lessons to gain better obedience with Wolfe in a private less stressful setting and later move to a group to add the distractions and interactions, of course, with your instructors approval. Wolfe is a great dog and obviously very intelligent. Maybe even with Amanda? You seam to like her technique. Would you like me to put you in touch with her?
Please call me and we can talk more about helping you.
For now, I am forwarding my response to the rest of the Board as well as the treasurer for your refund. Thank you for training with us. I do hope to see you in the future. I wish you and Wolfe the best. I am sorry we were not able to help you.
Respectfully,
My reply:
I appreciate that the OCOC is taking my concerns seriously. My husband who is a Police officer wanted me to file a complaint with the Salisbury Police, but I wanted to see if the club would handle it. It seems that the club is at least addressing the situation and I appreciate that. I agree Wolfie is a great pup. I am aware of the commitment training a dog is. He is my third German Shepherd and my husband's fourth German Shepherd and we both are in agreement that he is exceptionally intelligent even in comparison to our previous German Shepherds. His problem is, in my opinion, that he gets excited seeing so many dogs in one closed in area. He is well socialized and does not behave like this when we are out walking , at the beach, at the pet store with other dogs around, or at the dog park. He does settle down and learn in class. All of his exercises are done well, except for his downs. He is very much an alpha dog. He is very different at home, and will do his downs immediately and with enthusiasm. We practice it on the beach, in the yard, at the dog park, and on our walks with no problem. I don't even need to offer treats. I was very surprised that he is having a hard time with this in class.
I will fill out the survey and send it in. I do have a suggestion for the club. Maybe the instructors and the officials could wear some sort of badges so that newcomers would know who everyone is. If I knew that the woman who assaulted my dog, and yelled at me was not an instructor, I would never have let her touch my dog, or yell at me in that manner. As it was, I was having a hard time with the fact that some one I thought to be a club official would scream at me that I wouldn't be allowed back or hurt my dog. If Amanda hadn't told me that she didn't know who that woman was, I would have went home then and there. I did have to laugh at the whole notion of the spray bottle as Wolfie loves to get sprayed in the face. Any chance he has to put his face in water spray, he takes.
I would like to know what Amanda charges for private instruction. you can give her my email so she can contact me. Thank you again for your help, and for the club's concern in this matter.
