So My GSD that we adopted was neutered on 4/12. They did the strangest neuter procedure where they left the scrotum fully intact. They just took the goods out. It still hangs there and he licks at his pee pee (not the sack) I was wondering if anyone has ever seen anything like this? I thought about calling my vet and asking what the cost would be to remove it. IDK if the licking is related to that but I cant help think it may be... I dont want to put graphic photos up that would get me in trouble but if someone wants to see what I mean I can.

I'm fairly certain this is completely normal. The scrotum will shrink up a bit tighter to his body with time.

Its been a Loooonnnggg time since i had a dog neutered (my dog other male dog is 19) and they cut the whole sack and all off. I didnt even know they could do it this way. Doesnt seem to make sense to me since the incision spot is at the top how would it drain? So weird...

Most vets do leave the sack unless specifically asked to remove it. It will shrink in a couple of week and you'll barely notice it, especially with the GSD hair

I thought that was the only way they did it. But what do I know, I have only seen one dog neutered at that was my guy. Like one poster said, his scrotum has shrunk alot since we got him. So now he looks like a pup, but at least he doesnt look like a girl :wild:

We have NEVER removed the scrotum it's not procedure. And I strongly doubt it has ever been removed.

There are two different ways to neuter. Either a slit is made in the actual scrotum and the testicles are removed, then the slit is sutured shut.

most vets make an incision in front of the scrotum right vehind the prepuce, push the testicles forward through the incision, remove them, then suture the incision shut.

Young animals with smaller testicles or some adult animals have a scrotum that shrinks drastically and is almost undetectable after the surgery. However sometimes there's bleeding (completely normal) or larger scrotums like a matute adult male that dont shrink right away. Its empty skin now and will shrink as time passes. It's completely normal. I would never put my dog through an anesthetic procedure to remove some lose skin like a residual scrotum after neuter.

I am not going to I just did not think it was normal. My Shiba when neutered they took it all. But that was more years ago than I can count. I just didnt realize they did it this way now and it seems strange the location of the incision. When we geld horses its always in a position that allows it to drain. No worries boy isnt going through anything unnecessary he's been through enough aw:

I've seen about 500 neuters done this way. LOL.

Sometimes the scrotum shrinks and sometimes it doesn't. Frag was neutered at 2 years old and his barely shrunk... he still has a hairy sac hanging there, but he was very well endowed as well.

Interesting. I thought they removed everything. Now, I've only had one male dog neutered, but they removed both his tackle and tackle box.

Why do they just remove the testes and not both?

My guess is because it's a lot quicker, less painful, cheaper, and quicker to heal with a smaller incision. And, not as easy to open up accidentally when dogs start rough housing before they should.

Are you SURE the scrotum was removed? I find it more likely to believe that the skin shrunk down and it looked removed. Many times the skin will shrink down immediately post op

Well like I said incision is usually underneath the bodg right behind the prepuce (penis) and in front of the scrotum

Btw its called a scrotal ablation, when the scrotum is removed. Some vets worry about doing it as it greatly tightens the skin and may cause problems when the dog moves.

I'm positive. It was a very long incision/suture line. It looked like they just grabbed his gonads, cut everything, and sewed him back up. The skin was also pretty tight and our personal vet made a comment about how the shelter cut off too much scrotal skin.

I figured they'd at least cut off half of the scrotum and sew it back up, but I thought it was the norm to just take everything off.

I learned something new.

I have heard of some rescues and shelters requesting it on older dogs because sometimes the skin DOESN'T shrink back up when you have a larger male with larger testicles, and they want the dog to be as adoptable as possible
