I am living out in Okinawa and with the summer time rolling the temp will start getting pretty hot. I have a 7 month long haired GSD and was thinking of getting his hair trimmed down short to help cool him off. Is this a good idea? I looked at other forums and they have all had mixed reviews, so I haven't heard a clear cut answer if this is good or bad. Anyone have some advice.

I wouldn't trim the long hair because the long hair keeps your dog cooler. What makes the dog warm is the undercoat and he will shed that out - you can help the process by brushing him daily.

You can trim his stomach hair - that will help him be cool when he lays on a cool surface.

His long coat actually HELPS him stay cool. Cutting it not only decreases his ability to stay cool but you also run the risk that the coat will not come back correctly. It may come back as a different texture.
