We have an emergency fund of 4 month's living expenses set aside for, well, emergencies. If we didn't, I'd have pet health insurance. I like being able to say, "I don't care what it costs; do what's best for my dog."
Things happen. Rocky has cut himself on different things and required stitches twice. When Cash died at the emergency vet clinic the bill was over $1000.
