Tattoos in the ears are common place I think nowadays. The breeder I got my Apollo from tattooed his ear. if you google it, I'm sure you'll find other pups with theirs tattooed. Welcome to the boards!

The tattoo is a form of identification to trace the the dog. Each breeder has their own "code" and numbering system. It is typical in German line dogs versus American line dogs.

As GSDTrain said you may be able to trace the dog through the USA. The breeder may be interested in knowing the status of the dog too.

Thanks for rescuing and welcome to the board.

GSDs from a SV breeder have a tatoo in their ear, it is 7 characters
long and broken down as follows:
first 2 characters: tattooer ID
3 rd: last number of year dog was born
4th and 5th: Breeder ID
6th: Litter letter
7th: Order the dog was whelped.

You can find the ID's on the USA website.
Hope this helps!
