[Goofy]

Ok so this happened twice so far... This morning after goofy went out to do his business and played for a while, I came in to have my tea and the wife notices that he is paw is red. I hurriedly put down the mug and ran towards going out to him. When I get out I asked to "sleep" so I could see his paw and he peed submissively..

After that I went to pet him on top of his head and he ducked to avoid my hands. Mind you he has never been hit so this is what is wierding me out. He has not been out of our care or with strangers without us present so I don't know how or why he is doing this..

Could this be another fright faze that GSD's go through. He is 26 months old...any ideas as I am stumped.

I'd be offering my hand out with a treat for awhile and then pet/treat. He may be going thru some phase.

You clicker train? Just taking that out and doing some fun training will help immediately. As well as if you've been doing a good job with playing and tugging with him. That all will help take his mind off whatever and put you back into the 'wonderful world'.

If it's simply a weird temperment phase he's going through, yes treats from the hand is a good idea.

But out of curiosity - did you determine why his paw was red? If he's in pain, etc, it will sometimes cause dogs to submisively urinate out of pain/fear when you mess with it (haven't had this happen personally with mine, but have heard of it happening from others)

I'd be using the treats and fun but Rerun may be right and a trip to the vet is in order to get the foot looked at.

thanks for the responses. When I got home this evening goofy was not putting any weight at all on his right foot. He is hopping around.

I took him to the vet tonight and she checked him over..pressed on the paw,moved the leg up and down, but goofy did not let out a sound. Checked his ears, nothing there.. she did give him some pain killers but even she doesn't know whats up with his right foot.

She did say he has been licking both paws alot as they were red on the inside. i really hate seeing him like this. help!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing your energy - body language was different when you ran out towards him all worried about his paw. And since you were worried, your tone of voice may have been different too, all little differences that freaked Goofy out - If he is fine now, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

With the paw: could be some fungal/bacterial irritation? Last year, Keeta was licking one of her paws a lot, didn't like putting weight on it - but no pain reaction at all when examined. It looked like she may have gotten somekind of irritation from exposure to something - the skin between her pads was red oozing. She had never had skin issues prior to this, so I didn't think it was allergies, or food. Anti-bacterial/fungal ointment (from the vet) and a little booty to keep her paw clean and dry cleared it up. No reoccurence either.
