Storm swallowed something & not 100%

2702 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bearlasmom
sure what it was ? Was holding him on lead in the shop & turned around to go & he was sticking his tounge in & out ! I went to open his mouth, did so & seen something........think a piece of metal shaving. I tried to grab it & he swallowed it !

He never tries to eat this stuff & not sure what he was thinking !

I wonder now, anything I can give him to help if he tries to pass it smoothly ?

I worry so bad since it being sharp. Signs to look for if it doesn't pass ?

I remember finding glass in my Golden's poop before yrs. ago ! Why she dug up glass & ate it, I will never know. TG it never hurt her. She's 9 yrs. old now & doing good ! I worry so bad with sharp items !

Any suggestions ?

Thanks much..........................

oh god, i would be heading for the vet fast! metal can rip their poor bellies to pieces. oh dear me. there dogs give us such gray hairs dont they?
dont wait for any signs, by the time you see signs hon it could be too late. im not trying to scare you but this sounds serious
if it was metal it will certainly show up on a radiograph. yes, i agree, you should take him to his vet asap.

Well.........11:25 pm. at night now & not going to head anywhere now. I know this is scarey, but I know I seen our Golden pass glass at one point in her life & one time our other GS bit a piece of a plastic spoon in half & swallow it (pretty sharp piece). Never seen it pass or had a issue with her.

Don't want to jump the gun, but I am concerned. I'm just not 100% sure what he picked up & if I had to guess......a piece of metal maybe.

How long would it take for something to pass ? This was swallowed at 6:45 pm. I feed him tonight & will do in the morning.

Thanks..........
wow, i wish i had your patience. id be half way to the vet by now, lol
what type of metal shop is it? when i think of metal laying around a shop, i picture something razor sharp. and trying to pass that would be like a razor going through. if he starts coughing blood or it starts coming from other orifices i would head in no matter what time
This may sound stupid ( Ill tell the whole story if anyone wants to hear it) if you know someone who has a metal detector, get it and run it over the dog while hes laying on his side, if he swallowed metal, youll know it.
Let the dog eat some cotton fluff (sp?) with peanut butter. With cotton fluff I mean just the stuff we have in the bathroom and use for small wounds or eye makeup removal. The Cotton fluff will wrap itself around the object and protect the tissue. Then go to a vet asap for some xrays.
Good luck!
Peet & all................thanks for you info. I was looking for something in the lines of what Peet suggested so, to prevent any damage in case it is metal.

BTW Peet......love your avatar !

Well I just got back from the vet. Ran diggy Storm over this morning & left him there. Hope it all goes fine & nothing major.

I take him to work about every week once a week & why he decided to pick something up, has me baffled ! Nice day out & he didn't want to be at work maybe !

Keep paws crossed tight please.

Just an FYI for later, you can also feed a dog bread if you think they have swallowed something sharp (glass, metal, Christmas ornaments). The bread does the same thing as the cotton fluff and they will probably eat it without protest.

This also works for cleaning up glass shards if you break something on the floor and are worried about the dogs cutting their paws. Just press a slice of bread to the floor and the glass will stick to the bread.
Anything on Norm yet???

Good info everyone!!!
bread to pick up broken glass. cotton balls and peanut butter. i am always SO AMAZED at the great info on this site and everyones' willingness to take the time to share.

didn't mean to hijack the thread. luvour, how's your boy?
Thanks all for your help + good advice !

Norm had he x-rays & showed a pea size piece of something in his bowl, but the vet thought it was small & would pass fine so, he is home & doing fine.
Very happy mom. I needed the bread info, etc last night....that's why I posted. Oh well, our boy is fine & needs to learn to leave it much better !

Thanks all.............
