We had a Lab, whose weight got out of hand and had to go through this. NOT fun for anyone!
In the beginning of his diet, I walked him, but he was just not going to get all excited about doing much else. I, like you, worried about over-doing it. What we found was that as he lost weight just from lowered calorie intake and a little bit of exercise, he began to offer more energy, which we helped him use and that then accelerated the process.
It took a while - but "Drew" ended up svelte, healthy, shiny, active - and SO much happier than he had been.
So, take it slow, have patience and keep up the great work! You're doing a great thing for Elle and you will both be so pleased with the outcome.
