soothing techniques?

1324 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  clearcreekranch
scout is a normal little rambunctious puppy... but sometimes he overdoes it, besides telling him "NO" for something he's really not doing wrong, or stuffing his mouth with a toy that will only distract him for a few seconds, does anyone know any soothing techniques to just calm him down? I try to do some training with him, but he's either too tired or too wound up...

any idea's?

If the pup isn't teething, a game of tug is a way to soothe them! It will tire them out enough for you to then give a nice massage starting with the muzzle and working your way down to the toenails. I remember when my pups were young, they wanted me to hold their chewbone as they settled down. It was calming to have me with them if they were overtired and having a hard time to settle. I would then massage their ears in small circular motions and work my way down the body. Dogs really seem to like having their eye area gently massaged too. Places they can't do it themselves.
TTouch is a great technique.
I used the TTouch techniques too, very fun for both of us and a great way to settle them down.

This is interesting, how did you guys learn? Did you have to go to a seminar?
I am on Linda Tellington-Jones e-mail list and there use to be some of the techniques described...as a way to entice you to go to the seminars.
I went to a Control Unleashed class(based on the book) the instructor of that showed us many of the techniques used w/ TTouch.
there's no trying to train. you train and socialize
everyday, several times a day. use the the rambuction times for training
or play with him. he might want your attention when
he's wound up or he could be bored.

My trainer says that if you pet your dog very calmly and very slowly (from the eyebrows to the withers) and talk in a soothing voice, it's supposed to calm them down. It works well, but sometimes they are just too stimulated and don't notice.
This is a good thread that I'm going to keep following. I've a 8 week old puppy that has an overdose of energy (which pup doesnt). So these soothing techniques might help settle him down

exactly, im not trying to turn him into a zombified pup... just don't want all my jeans to have holes and ankles to be all scabbed up LOL other then that yeah he is definatly playful and full of life... but sometimes daddy gets tired!!!

haha the T touche makes me laugh! i saw a lady do it to a tiger on tv once and i always do it to my pups and my family/friends think im crazy and that i made it up lol
also what i do is i sit on the floor with legs spread and have the dogs lay on the inside on my leg on their right side (i read its a dogs natural sleeping side) and i just say settle in a calm voice and pet them sofly, once they calm down on their own they can get up. its great because if i have to cut their nails or take them to a vet i can say settle and the know to lay down and be calm.

That always works well for me.
Right! First Max needs to calm down enough to lie down then let me pet him without chewing on me.

My husband uses this technique when he comes home from work. Wolf is soooooooo excited to see him. He also makes him lay down first.
