SO I searched and couldn't find anything about this food on the forum.

I just bought Solid Gold food from Petco. The choices for food out here are extremely limited so it's pretty much Royal Canin GSD (I think it has corn in it and my dog wont eat anyway, Avoderm which I don't know that I care for and the **** Van Patton's stuff. I went with the solid gold because they had a large breed variety. The first couple of ingredients are as follows:
Bison,
Salmon Meal
Brown Rice
Millet(?)
Cracked Pearled Barley
Oatmeal
Rice Bran
Canola Oil
Flax Seed Oil
Guaranteed analysis is pretty standard
Crude protein is 22% Fat 9% fiber 4% moisture 10%
I also see vitamin B12, vitamin E supplement, as well as A, D and B6.

The bag was also of the utmost quality, vacuum packed with an airlock. When I opened it smell poured out and my (EXTREMELY PICKY) dog got very excited and wolfed it down even though it was only a little bit mixed in with the old food - that was a first.

Does anyone else know anything more about this food? I'd love some input here!

Annabelle couldn't tolerate the Wolfking and could tolerate the Natural Balance better. That's just my dog though. Everybody's dog reacts differently.

I feed the WolfKing as my first choice to rescues and also to 3 of my 4 dogs as their kibble ration part of their diet.

My fourth dog gets the Hund N Flocken and does very well on it with his EPI.

Here is a link to one of our previous threads on Solid Gold.

Sean has several different health related problems and we switched to the Hund-N-Flocken many years ago. We are extremely pleased with it and I'm sure if you asked Sean he would agree too.

i think wolf king is a good looking food for a gsd adult. is your dog still a pup (cant tell from the pic). if so, solid gold makes a good large breed puppy (wolf cub) that has the appropriate mineral levels for a puppy.

Solid Gold no longer uses the Salmon Meal - this is the old formula that was posted.

It is a good food but once they changed the formula Cooper starting getting these bumps on his skin - mainly on his back.

Cooper and Ava were both fed the wolf cub as pups and loved it - I do recommend this food.

Strange, got it right off the bag. Maybe my petco doesn't have the new ones yet. At any rate she's still shedding like crazy for the spring but the stools are always twice a day instead of 2-3 times and it was small and tight, even though I'm still mixing with the old food.

Solid Gold is EXPENSIVE though. I found a source for Innova, I may go that way if its a bit less money...

I just switched to wolf cub 3 weeks ago, and my boy doesn't like it..probably he doesn't like salmon, never touches the food..I'm going crazy..Yes, I took a look at solid gold ingredients and they replaced salmon meal with ocean fish meal. I'm gonna try canidae..

i just put my pup back on canidae after about a 2 month hiatus due to on and off loose stools. i figured out that i may have been overfeeding and that may have been the cause. after 2 weeks on the canidae, stool are small and firm, so im very happy because the canidae remains more economical than the others. i hope it works for you.

Kelsey,

What were you feeding?

The better foods are mostly sold at privately owned pet and feed stores. If you found Innova then Canidae should be there too along with Eagle Holistic.

No mater what you feed shedding is a spring time event for all of us.

Well I was feeding Eukanuba large breed....Schatzi actually did O.K. on it but in doing actual research(instead of actually believing what a dog food manufacturer claims on the bag) I decided we should switch. Minimal shedding and no barfing but she would need baths almost once a month because she would stink - same with the breath. Anway I want less(no) corn, but probably not quite grain free.

Mike, I wish I would have known about where to find good food 2 years ago! Still haven't found the Canidae, but I'll probably keep looking. Innova seemed to rate pretty well on the websites I've been to, but some of them group Innova with the Evo (which I don't think I can afford) so the results may be skewed. The guy that sells Innova has a couple GSD's himself, some on that kibble...I'll have to go take a gander at them.

It seems that Canidae is the overwhelming favorite on this board. I hope I can find it so I have a good option of the Innova doesn't work out, or vice-versa. Same with the solid gold if they all end up being in the same price range, Schatzi really loves it. Website says $42 for a 33 pound bag, BUT I could have sworn the store price was more AND what if the next bag I get has a different recipe?

Oh the drama, the anticipation!!!

edit: just found a few numbers for Canidae dealers nearby. The war to be the food my dog eats wages on like Donkey Kong.

We have the pups on wolfcub but are going to switch over to Canidae. Free shipping in the states for whenever we get back! 40 lbs bag on sale for $34 and then 22% off makes it worth while to pay for shipping it here.

My male has sensitivites to certain foods/ingredients, and the Solid Gold Wolfking is one he does well on.

He is also doing well on the TOTW salmon formula now.

He did the BEST on the Natural Balance Venison/brown rice, but that has been discontinued. I have not yet tried him on the new sweet potato venison, but may in the future.

For now, we are rotating 3 bags of the TOTW salmon, then the TOTW Bison/Venison. Both dogs doing great!

In the event that were to change, my first choice would be the Wolfking. We did try Canidae at one time, dogs did great for a couple of months, then wow -- explosive diarrhea, itching, gooby eyes, etc. Not sure why they would do well for almost 6 months, then the issues, but had to move away.

So it has come back to haunt me - the big bag I bought had OCEANFISH meal instead of Salmon - which is what the first smaller bag I bought had.

I got to hose buttmud off of the doggybed this morning. Gas and the runs all night!!!

This has never happened until now...this is so discouraging! I want my dog to be healthy but she hasn't ever had such pronounced digestion issues with nutro(besides very occasional gas) or more recently Eukanuba(other then large stools I guess, which yes IS a problem). I hope I'm not just fooling myself with the natural foods. I hear the grain-free ones can be ever more difficult when trying to avoid diarrhea.

She didn't really eat her food this morning either. Should I keep her on it for this bag?

Yes, the Oceanfish meal is the newer ingredient that they are using. They no longer use the Salmon meal.

Personally, I would go down the boiled chicken and rice with her for a couple of days, it's bland and helps when the tummy is upset. I wouldn't give her anymore of the SG b/c it obviously isn't agreeing with her. Keep her on the chicken and rice for maybe 2 days and then start adding in some new kibble. If she did well on the Nutro maybe you should go back to that.

I hope she starts feeling better soon ... keep me posted.

Thanks for the tidbit. She won't eat nutro or Eukanuba very well anymore though. I gave her the soft food in a roll(lamb&rice) to sustain her and settle her bowels for a day or two and then we went right to the sensitive digesting lamb and rice from Natural Balance(Petco let me bring in the open Solid Gold and swap it out). Still loose-ish stool but MUCH better immediately, and she eats it. It seems like a good food

I can't believe the difference from one ingredient in the solid gold! Anyway at this point I'm getting better results with Natural Balance and its cheaper to boot. We'll probably try the grain free NB or Canidae if I can find it after she's gotten a chance to settle her stomach for a few weeks/months and gain back the 5 or 6 pounds she lost...no need to traumatize her again if she does well. I feel so bad, I only want her to be healthy and comfortable for as long as she lives but I just made her sick!

It looks like everyone likes Solid Gold in theory and ingredients, but nobody can actually feed it because it gives the dogs the trots!
