Hi everyone. New to this site but am looking for information on SIBO. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. My 3 yr. old GSD was diagnosed with this and after 6mths of standard recommended treatment he is still very underweight. Anyone have any suggestions other than antibiotics.... or at least, in addition too? Thanks

You've come to the right place! There are several of us here!

My Gracie was 8 1/2 months when I finally requested that the blood tests be given. She was negative for EPI but positive for SIBO. She took 250 mg twice a day for 30 days of metronidazole and eats the Eukanuba/Iams Low Residue veterinary food. We have had one minor flare up (my fault) since Sept '06. Nothing else helped her - not pumpkin, not yogurt, not any type of enzymes. Just this food and the medication.

Here are some links for reading material. Ask your questions, we'll help you the best we can! Good luck!!

SIBO's going around! I have a SIBO dog as well (non-GSD). As well as antibiotics, you probably want to keep his diet low in fat. You can also add some probiotics to add back some of the good gut bacteria.

In addition to the links Jen provided, if you scroll to the bottom of this webpage: http://risa.dancingcavy.com/Health.html where I have a handful of links on SIBO as well.

Gracie lost only about 6 pounds total but she looked skinny as could be. She is up to almost 67 pounds now. I give her 2 1/4 cups breakfast and dinner, plus 1/2 cup at bedtime of the Low Residue food. She's getting about 1100 calories a day - she is VERY active.

I agree with Jean, check for EPI too if the weight loss has been significant.
