I have a 5 year old GSD male rescue that I have had for 2 years. His good on the leash, heels well and follows basic commands. The problem is he responds slowly and nonchalantlyand sometimes has to be told twice to sit and down commands. I often give him a pop on the leash correction, but I am concerned he will be conditioned to respond only to the correction. Any suggestions?

I would go back to basics. Get some treats or use your dog's meals and "reteach" the sit and down. Since sit and down as commands have now become poisoned, you may want to choose new commands for these behaviors. I would not name the behaviors until they are exactly what you want. A lot of people name a behavior before a dog truly knows it and is confident performing it and they end up with slow or sloppy behaviors because that is what they named.

There are multiple methods for teaching the sit and down so just choose which ever you like best. I like to teach it by luring then fade the lure later on.
