Skunked…

942 Views 35 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Hopps
It was the inevitable. Surprisingly she did not get hit on her body, just her mouth. I rinsed with cool water and brushed her teeth.

I kept forgetting to get peroxide. I have a grooming appointment for Fern, I have to call in to de-skunk her.

the whole front yard reeks and I hope Fern learned a lesson. The inside of the house smells periodically, my hands smell like it too.

any recommendations on how to destroy the skunk smell in the house? Especially the carpet. I made makeshift shoes so she doesnt drag the odor into the carpet. She’s been banished to the bathroom for now.

There are products (One called Nature's Miracle here) that are designed for that. I think you'll find most pet food stores will retail a product for either dog baths or carpets/furniture.

That smell is really persistent and can re-appear on a wet dog for weeks 😕
Glad she's okay, keep an eye on her. Where I live, someone's BC was skunked, got the dog in the face and nose, the dog died. This is not an article about that BC, but is useful info. My BC got skunked last year, and yup, she ran from the skunk and promptly threw up. Luckily I was there, didn't see the skunking, but saw her run up towards the house and start vomiting. Luckily she just got hit a little bit, and mostly on her chest, was able to do the Dawn/Peroxide/Baking Soda immediately. She barely smelled after the treatment. we’ll grab the natures miracle stuff. Some of it got on my skin and it still smells despite washing! A lot of it got on the concrete floor in front of the house and it stinks!

the strange part is the skunk stuff smelled almost like burnt rubber? I thought it would smell more like the actual skunky smell. I guess skunk is going to be Fern’s new perfume for two weeks.

I did see Fern gagging and spitting everything out. 99% of it was on her face and so far it looks like she’s doing ok. I’m going to keep a very close eye on her, thanks for the info. I didn’t realize it could be deadly. We will keep a close eye on her and we have the emergency vet address ready.

It's not just the carpets -- even the clothes you wore cleaning the dog up will have absorbed it, the towels you used after washing the dog, and possibly the couch if the dog was on it or pressed against it....it's a process to de-stink the house after that!

I swear by the HP + Dawn + baking soda mix -- a neighbor at my mountain house brought me a big bottle of HP and mixed it up in an old jug and helped me pour it over the dog (I wore gloves to work it in). Stores were closed because Ms. Skunk likes to wander after 9PM....so this was a lifesaver. I now keep big bottles of HP in the closet "just in case."

Skout's Honor has a carpet machine fluid if you have a Bissell-type machine at home. They also have skunk fluid that is very good to use on the dog (sold at Petco etc.) -- but I used it as a "finishing touch" a few days later AFTER we had used the HP-blend:

For the laundry, a long Oxyclean soak did help for me, but not all fabrics can take several hours of that.

Borax produces hydrogen peroxide when used with hot water -- and that's what I used with detergent to wash the dog bath towels. (20 Mule Team Laundry Borax can be found in the laundry aisle, bottom shelf, at Walmart.)

Another versatile product that's pretty "chemical smelling" but works for floor cleaning (and even laundry) is Odo-Ban. Home Depot has the gallon-jug of concentrate. If you buy the gallon, you can add it to laundry, mop with it (even vinyl flooring absorbs that dang smell...), put it in a spray bottle to use on fabric (couch, carpet, dog bed), etc. It even works to de-stink your dog-waste trash can or bucket. It's my "emergency" product when I don't know what else to use--but I have to leave all of the windows open for a while after using it. (They also have an outdoor yard spray that attaches to a hose, if you have a deck that got hit -- but I think I'd try mixing up a bucket of borax and hot water and splash it all over first.)

No, Nature's Miracle won't help much. The peroxide, baking soda and liquid soap works miracles, though! 500 ml. (one large bottle) peroxide (okay for a large dog, you may want to double it) 1/4 c. baking soda, and one teaspoon liquid dish soap (because the spray is oily, and this will help dissolve it.) Mix and apply IMMEDIATELY, as a vigorous chemical reaction is taking place. Don't be afraid to sponge around her lips and mouth - the solution won't hurt her.

Do not try to bottle the mixture. It will explode the bottle. It produces a lot of oxygen in a big hurry. I think this particular chemical reaction is the reason we're not allowed to take water bottles on to airplanes.

Make sure you sponge out her ears! I've found from experience that GSD ears will hold the smell as no doubt her ears were at full attention when she got blasted! Use a cloth or sponge to apply the solution to the face and ears. Rinse well.

The solution also works on furniture and carpets, however, the peroxide may bleach the colour, so test it first in an area where no one will notice.

Yep! I thought it smelled like kerosene or something similar when it first happened -- but the smell definitely "develops" over time in a nasty way. My dog came inside with his eyes streaming rubbing his face on me urgently, asking for help, and I did not think "skunk" at first -- I got a big "petroleum-like" odor, and at first I couldn't figure out what happened. Apparently the sensation for dogs is about like being hit by tear gas.

Oh yes, the stores are always closed when it happens! I keep 2 bottles of HP in my medicine cupboard for exactly this reason. I've learned the hard way that this pays!

Mating season is in February, so that's the month when these encounters seem to be most common, and you won't want to have to keep your dog outside in February weather in Canada. Also, I knew the neighbours wouldn't get much sleep if she was separated from me. The one time, the only solution was to shut her in the tiny guest bathroom, because that would be the easiest room to clean once she was deskunked.

oh, poor Fern. I found this:
maybe it will help.
When I had one hanging around the outside of the house animal control told me to spread moth balls. It worked but it drew all sorts of other animals looking to roll in the moth balls. (fleas?)
Sorry, hope she learned not to be so curious.

Ha, ha, must be the time of the year. Yesterday coming home from work, my hubby said that the house smelled so bad, maybe because of the local dump and the wind direction? No!!!! Deja was skunked on her back somehow. Luckily I had all the supplies ready for years. Peroxide, baking soda and dawn soap. One wash and she smelled good. Could still smell it in the house until this morning.

We had a skunk trail behind the bedroom window til i blocked off an old den site and tossed some bleach rags in there. God almighty wouldnt it wake me up at 3am with mini sprays outside the window behind Rosies bed. Absolutely terrible. When we first moved into this house, a skunk sprayed under the house. That stunk for months….

hope y’all smell better!

I used vinegar when it happened to one of mine a long time ago and it worked well enough. It was before I found this forum.

Water locks the odor into the coat. After that has happened then you are basically stuck waiting for it to wear off on it's own.

My go to is peroxide and baking soda with a little shampoo, make a paste apply and work through the affected areas for 10 minutes. Avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth. If you can do it fairly soon it will remove most if not all of the odor. Condition well afterwards because it is very drying to the skin and coat. Guy has been sprayed 2x and this got him odor free after one bath.

Don't hate skunks though; they destroy ground nests of Yellow Jackets to eat the larvae.

Doesn’t hydrogen peroxide bleach their coats a little?
Doesn’t hydrogen peroxide bleach their coats a little?
I had the need to use it at least twice, maybe three times over the years and never had a problem with that. It's only on for 10 minutes

Even if it does bleach the fur a bit, it's a LOT better than having a stinky dog!

Howdy everyone! Fern was ok with the banishment and I finally used the peroxide, baking soda and dish soap solution on her. It got most of the smell off but her mouth and nose stinks. Thanks for all the advice, it really helped! I dried her as much as possible and made her wear a garbage bag. I made shoes out of plastic bags. The house is skunk free!

I told her she needs to go to jail (bathroom). It doesn’t look like she feels guilty… look at her smug gri

She’s not a fan of the banishment but it is what it is!!! She pleads not guilty
