I use a 3/8 leather lead and Stosh is a 78 lb, 8 month old puppy. I always hold the lead in my left hand so I fold it over a few times, the thinner one makes it easier to do that, especially if I have to switch it to my right hand. And it's comfortable in my hand. I wouldn't worry about the strength of it, a leather lead isn't going to break.
