I need to get a thinner leash as I've lost my old one and can't remember what size it was.

The one I have now is 5/8" and my instructor said it was a bit thick for obedience work.

Would 3/8" be too thin for an 80lb GSD?

Looking at leather.

I have a 1/4" and would image even with another 1/8th it would be to thin for a GSD. I had a really nice braided & riveted one for Lucky that was 1/2". It was the prefect size for her (often over 60lbs) and for my hand.

I use a 3/8 leather lead and Stosh is a 78 lb, 8 month old puppy. I always hold the lead in my left hand so I fold it over a few times, the thinner one makes it easier to do that, especially if I have to switch it to my right hand. And it's comfortable in my hand. I wouldn't worry about the strength of it, a leather lead isn't going to break.

I prefer a 1/4" for training, but 3/8" is just fine. Your instructor is correct that your leash is too big.
