Well, today I broke down and the family and I packed up and took Shadow to a dog park. After hearing so many negative things, we weren't sure about it, but a relative recommended one by her house.
We went and it was wonderful. They have a seperate section for small, nervous or young dogs, with a wading pool, balls etc. There is a large area with bridges and a bit of bush for the larger dogs and even a small agility course.
Shadow hasn't really been exposed to groups of dogs before, so my husband and I weren't sure how he'd do. We took him into the small area and began throwing balls for him. There were no other dogs in that area. After a while a lady who is a trainer came by and brought her 6 dogs (1 being a beautiful LHGSD) in. There were NO problems. Shadow played so well with her pack.
After they left, we decided we wanted to check out the rest of the park so out we went. We tried the agility course, he loved it, and he liked racing through the trees with the other dogs.
What amazed me the most was that even though he was tearing it up with other dogs, as soon as I called his name, he came running back to my side. What a shock!!! I knew he would come in my yard, but in an environment like this, with other dogs... WOW. I was impressed.
The trainer said she is there every day and invited me to bring Shadow. I think we're going to go 3-4 times a week. It'll be nice to have a professional on hand to help me with any issues.
