Re: shadow

Try keeping him leashed in the house for a while. Just let the leash drag behind him, so when he starts to focus in on the shadows, you can grab the leash and correct the behavior. I would also try teaching him a "leave it" command as well. Use the command and when he doesnt respond, correct with the leash. GSD's are very intelligent and he should pick up on the "leave it" command pretty fast. It will also help later on if he starts to get into anything else, *leave it* will be a great help!
Re: shadow

Hi Tom

This chasing behaviour may have developed because the previous owners had him chasing a laser pointer. The chasing of reflections and shadows can turn into obsessive-compulsive behaviour.

I would do as Ailyn said: keeping him on a leash to re-direct his attention. Also, get a good exercise program going. Heavy exercise, lots of training, 100% supervision to prevent and stop shadow chasing. Keep his mind and body busy with positive, challenging activities.

It will be a lot of work, and much effort, but if you don't stop this now, it could escalate and get worse.
