Hi there i am writing just to ask who else has had or has a Senior GSD with this problem. My sweet girl of 12 years was diagnosed with this yesterday after some test and a chest xray. Our vet started her on 40 mg of lasix 3 times a day ,enalapril 10mg. 2 x a day , pred 20mg 2 x a day for 3 days then 1x a day for 3 days then 1 a day as needed. She was also put on cephalexin 500mg 3x a day til gone ... Just Looking for any information any one has on this condition. Worried sick and just want to get all the info we can .... Thanks

I know you are asking about Senior GSD with that problem... my last dog Saint Bernard had it and died last summer, he was diagnosed with enlarged heart and within days had serious problems breathing and had blood in his lungs and had to be put down. He was 10 years old (which is old for a St. Bernard). Jesse is a full breed GSD puppy and he has helped me get over the pain of losing Jed the Saint Bernard. I am very very sorry to hear about your sweet girl and I hope all the medicine helps her.
Re: Severe Enlarged Heart .our Sweet 12 yr old gir

Thank you very much but she took a turn for the worse this after noon and the vet met us for an emergency visit and we had to put her down. She was basically drowning in her own fluid. It was all so sudden as you stated with your st. bernard. Letting her go was a hard thing to do but we knew that she was suffering. So we made the only decision that we could and we stayed with her and I laid my head against hers as she passed hoping she knew what joy her 12 years with us had brought us and how much she was loved and will be missed. She will forever be in our hearts.. RIP Keyla ....

I'm very sorry for your loss. I understand how difficult it is to lose them so suddenly. Please take comfort in the time you had together.

Re: Severe Enlarged Heart .our Sweet 12 yr old gir

I am sorry to hear you lost Keyla. As I said that happened to our St. Bernard, came out of no where and lost him very very fast as well and broke our hearts so I know how you are feeling. My thoughts are with you.
Re: Severe Enlarged Heart .our Sweet 12 yr old gir

Thanks again . My heart is just broken and i have such and empty feeling but while posting this on this board i ran across a post for a GSD here in Vicksburg needing a home well long story short guess where she ended up . She Will never replace my girl Keyla but made me feel good to help this girl out . I went to see her yesterday and she came home with us for an over night visit and did great so today we desided that we would give her a home . She is so sweet but i guess because of he age no one was interested in her . Well keep your fingers crossed for us.... something good may of come out of something so heart breaking.
Re: Severe Enlarged Heart .our Sweet 12 yr old gir

No, your new girl can never replace Keyla, but she'll find a way to worm her way into your hearts and make herself equally as special, they always do!!!

I found the thread with her pictures - she's BEAUTIFUL!!!

Re: Severe Enlarged Heart .our Sweet 12 yr old gir

I am so sorry that you lost Keyla. I didn't post previously since my experience was also not positive. I lost Sophie (gsp) very suddenly to heart failure in December. Her story is in the loving memories section of this board.

Your newly rescued dog may be just what you need to help you. There's something special abut a dog that comes to us when we need them most.

I wish you good days ahead.
Re: Severe Enlarged Heart .our Sweet 12 yr old gir

It's never a replacement - it's more a successor (sp.) I think that getting another dog is a fine tribute to the one that was with you before. I can't imagine any greater honor to her memory. Congratulations on a fine choice.
