My almost 7 month old male GSD is constantly secreting from his genitals, sort of a greenish/yellowish gooey substance. He has done so ever since I got him at 3 months. It's not A LOT but it's something noticeable and it worries me. The substance dries up and stays around the area stuck to his hair in and it gets hard. I have not consulted w/vet since everything else seems to be normal. The only abnormal thing recently was he had an eye infection (conjuntivitis) for which he was given antibiotics. He was secreting the same kind of substance out of his eyes when this eye infection started.

Is this normal?

I hope I am explaining this right. Please help with your thoughts/ideas....

It sounds like a penile sheath infection. I used to have this as a recurring problem with my previous mixed breed.

I only used vitamin C to clear it up, as it used to be a mild case. 500mg a day, until cleared up. What you describe sounds more severe. The vets told me that they have a topical antibiotic ointment you can get through prescription.

Did you not bring up the genital secretions when you took him in for his eye infection?

I know it sounds terribly stupid but no, I did not bring it up last time. However, I will take him back tomorrow and ask the vet.

Regarding the person who said that he/she gave their mixed breed vitamin c, which kind? powder? caps? Please let me know. Thanks.

One of our fosters had the same type of secretion. It turned out he had an enlarged prostrate and was put on anitbiotics (oral..but I can't remember what type) for a uninary tract infection. He would also leak urine around the house...don't know if that is an issue for your guy also. I would head to the vet...anytime I see anything yellow or green I worry about infection and get to the dr.

He was a 45lb dog, and I gave him the regular 500mg chewable tablets. He liked those, ate them happily. But considering the lenght of time this has been going on for you, and the continuous nature of the discharge you are seeing in your dog, I would skip the vitamin C and go directly to the vet for a proper diagnosis.
