I'm not a vet, but from others we've gotten....this looks like a classic example of generalized demodectic mange! Especially if he's one year old...because it usually starts as a puppy so by 1 if untreated it would look that bad.
My boy Charly was a case like this! It’s NOT contagious, and can be treated rather simply and inexpensively with oral ivermectin (no dips, those usually don't work and are pretty rough on them). It’s a slow process but WELL worth it. Usually these skin conditions come with skin infections, but antibiotics take care of that along with good food and he will be beautiful in a few months!
His eyes do look pretty goopy...probably conjunctivitis (cured with eye drops and/or antibiotics) or a secondary infection due to his mange!
OMG that poor baby. Does anyone know if this shelter will even do a skin scrape to confirm if it's demodectic? People are more likely to step up knowing it's not anything contagious.....
Is that a bump near the base of his tail? I want to help him somehow.....
My GSD had a bump like that(not sure if his was that big he has lots of hair) and it was just the anal Sac's if they are not infected or ruptured they should just be able to express them. If that in fact is the cause of the bump
I think the bump is just his hip bone and loose skin....with demodectic mange there is some swelling from fluid retention, makes their skin a bit wrinkly, feet swell, etc.
I would bet my paycheck that its demodectic (of course no way to know for sure without skin scrape) but sarcoptic, which is the contagious one, itches and I think he'd have scratches and wounds from where he was biting and scratching himself!
I spoke with a woman named Angela. She said that they do not have a vet on staff, but there is a former vet tech who works there and she seems to think it is demodectic mange. Also, she said that the bump that you're seeing is his bones because he is very skinny. She said for rescues, his pull fee would be $55 and she would need your non-profit status paperwork faxed to them to get that rate (rescue rate). She also could not confirm that he would be euthanized by tomorrow am because she said that was only the director's decision. Oh, and she also said that if a rescue steps forward, she would need to have a list of three people that they can release the dog to- I hope that makes sense.
