After much anticipation we picked up Sarge on Fri. After a long car ride (which he handled very well) we all got home very tired to find this puppy does NOT like the crate. We're working on that. Observations so far...very strong nerves, checks things out and investigates, good prey drive...chases everything, hands, shoelaces, pantlegs, Gus the Schnauzer. Goes as soon as he gets outside (often). I think he's going to be a good one (If we survive puppyhood). If anyone has any advice on making the crate more inviting I would appreciate hearing it. Working with treats and short stays (until he stops screaming). Pictures are forthcoming soon as I get them downloaded on the comp. He's a cutie.

Congratulations! Sarge sounds like a wonderful puppy. Hope you'll post pictures soon.

Crate... you're doing the right thing.. treat when you put him in and not taking out when crying.

I'd only add that, before you crate him, give him a little exercise (tired puppy) and make sure he's comfy (doesn't need to pee or poop).

It always helped mine to put a soft toy in the crate and a ticking (if you can find the loud manual wind type)near by. I also put a light cover - sheet or some such over the crate so pup isn't distracted.

Good luck.

best wishes with the new pup... here's to many many happy years together

dylan hated the crate. puppyhood was a long miserable 4 months... he bit me constantly, would not let me hold him, etc. then, i broke-down the crate, drug it down the cellar, and gave dylan the run of the house. 3 days after doing so, he was a different dog. he even let me pet him

hope your experience is much more positive than ours was.

WooHoo That's awesome!!

Goodluck on getting through the puppyhood, it can be trying!

I always have like a baby blanket or something soft they can be with in the crate, always seems to do the trick for me. Best wishes, can't wait for those pics!!

We never crated Shay or Meb when they were puppies, but Shay had a crate (with the door off) in the back entryway and we blocked off that room with a gate. He used this for night-night time and when we were at work, otherwise we took the gate down. DH and I would put Shay to bed everynight and sing him a night-night song and he had his teddy bear in there that he would cuddle with and then we would play his CD "Susy Bogguss-Nobody love/Nobody gets hurt". I just grabbed a CD and it worked so we played it everynight. I still play it sometimes at night just for ole time sake and always tell Shay about when he was a puppy. Yah I know, kinda going overboard but we never had kids. I think the success to it is repetative. Shay really liked it and if he had to go potty in the night he would whine and I got up and took him outside and he came right back in and I would start the CD again and he would go right back to sleep. We did this until he was about 4-5 months until we figured that he was old enough to sleep in the bedroom with us. Best of luck with Sarge. Hope this helps.
