Rotton Smelling Ear?

2353 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Konotashi
This morning my mom noticed that Schatzi, our 15/16 yr. old mini schnauzer's ear smells like something rotting. I about vomited when I smelled it.

Does anyone know what it might be?

She's going to take her in later today, but I'm just looking for ideas. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, she's not messing with it or anything. Mom just went to pick her up to carry her downstairs, and when she smelled her ear, she got a less-than-pleasant surprise.

**I wish I could edit the title, I just realized that rotten is spelled with an e. D:

It's an ear infection. They are quite smelly!
Ear/yeast infection probably. I wouldn't put anything in the ear. Let the vet deal with it and give the proper medicine.
Mom said she found a cut on her ear. :(

She has an appointment for later today.
Maybe she was digging at it and scratched it?

I know when my ears hurt or my sinuses are plugged, a heating pad helps loosen everything up. YOu could try putting a hot, wet washcloth in a sandwich bag, wrap it in a towel and place it over her ear. That might ease some discomfort for her.

X2 - get her to the Vet ASAP !
infection! vet immediately!!!
I am going to ask a stupid question here to Konotashi.

I see alot of stuff on your pom all the time.

Do you have a german shepherd dog? :)
Nope she doesn't :) I think the plan is to get one at some point (am I right?), but for now Ozzy is the unofficial sidekick on the board

Exactly, Konotashi does not have a GSD, but she wants to get one in the future. So until then, we get to see lots of pictures of her adorable Ozzy
Ozzy is our mascot GSD trapped in a pom body. lol.

Kewl! Lets get Ozzy a little GSD K9 shirt or something!!! :wild:

On the ear, our lab used to get stinky ear....horrible smell. Was always an infection.
Don't have a GSD yet, but in the future I want either a Czech/DDR or WGWL GSD.
'Til then, I got Ozzy. :)

But for Schatzi - it was a pretty good sized cut on the top of her head that got infected. :( The vet said that because of her age, they didn't want to do surgery (I imagine to remove dead tissue), so they sent Mom home with meds. They said it looks like she cut it on something metal. I bet she cut it on the air conditioner outside. She spends a lot of her time out there sleeping next to it. Gotta take her back in 10 days, observe how she's doing 'til then. Poor baby. It's worse than I thought it'd be.

Wow...hope she gets better :(
well i hope she gets better ASAP!
there is a thing at Tractor Supply called EMT Gel. Ask your vet if you can put that on it. It should help heal it up but I would be concerned about "sealing" in the the infection.
Update: Schatzi's doing lots better. She's acting like her normal self. We were getting a bit worried there for a bit. She was doing literally nothing but sleeping all day, she was favoring one of her front legs, and she was just acting off. I thought maybe it was the antibiotics, 'cause one of my gliders that was on it acted odd when he was put on it, but she's good now. Her head is looking a million times better. :)
